That would be a great place for me to start. The fuel stops have been a big concern. Thanks for your help and info.

Bill's earlier comment about cutting and laminating the Inside Passage maps is an excellent suggestion. Having a decent area chart (versus a closer-in navigation chart) can be very useful, and really helps you learn the overall geography of the area.

I like FineEdge Publication Inside Passage maps ( http://www.fineedge.com/BOOK%20LISTS/planning_maps.html ).

I bought a copy of each chart and cut them into approximately placemat size pieces (oriented northward) and used them constantly. I still have them, and refer to them frequently when planning or discussing the Inside Passage. You can also laminate them so that all the southern charts are on one side and northern charts on the other side (not so many placemats that way).

Casey, I used the FineEdge Inside Passage maps, too. They really are a great way to dream about the trip at home, as well as do actual planning before hand and en route.

Here's a note on fuel stops I wrote for another cruiser:

There are lots of fuel docks in the San Juans, Gulf Islands, and along the BC mainland on the east side of the Strait of Georgia. There's fuel at Campbell River and a few other places in the Desolation Sound area. North of there fuel docks are further apart.

There are fuel stops on the west side of Vancouver Island, but I'm not up to date on that area. We haven't been to the Queen Charlotte Islands.

We've been cruising mostly SE Alaska the last few summers, so may not be current on BC fuel dock changes - I've heard that some have closed down rather than upgrade facilities as required. The Waggoner Guide may be a good source of more current BC info. But, here are some we've used:

Queen Charlotte Strait:
Port McNeill
Sullivan Bay
Port Hardy

Rivers Inlet:
Duncanby Landing
Dawson's Landing

BC North Coast:
Bella Bella
Shearwater
Klemtu
Hartley Bay (iffy quality at one time?)
Prince Rupert

I'm sure there's fuel at Bella Coola and Kitimat, but we haven't been there yet.

SE Alaska:
Ketchikan
Wrangell
Petersburg
Kake
Angoon (M-F, I think)
Tenakee Springs
Sitka
Craig
Juneau
Hoonah
Bartlett Cove (Glacier Bay)
Elfin Cove
Pelican (iffy quality at one time?)
Haines
Skagway

There are a few more in SE Alaska that we've not yet tried.

If you have a comfortable range of 200 nm you should be able to get around more or less anywhere. If you can do 300 nm you'll be more flexible in your routes with less planning on fuel stops.

Add to the Broughton Islands area (Queen Charlotte Strait):

Lagoon Cove
Pierre's at Echo Bay

On the north BC coast.

Hartley Bay now has a modern fuel facility with a large supply.

In SE Alaska:

Yes Bay in the Behm Canal.
Thorne Bay
Pt Baker/Port Protection
Craig

If a fuel stop is mandatory, always call ahead to determine supply, sometimes the fuel barge can run out or not get to a location as scheduled.

I just checked logs from our trips, and I don't see any fuel stops that haven't been listed already. Others have mentioned this too, but I'll repeat myself again as well: It's important to try to check fuel availability and hours of operation at planned fueling stops in more remote areas. And do not rely solely on guide books - especially if the publication date is a few years old. On our first trip we were surprised to find the fuel dock out of business at Alert Bay, a planned stop. Fortunately, Port McNeil is close by and it was our backup. I tend to be very conservative about letting the tanks get low.

And again, be prepared to be patient. Dawson's Landing, Klemtu, Thorne Bay, and Point Baker come to mind, for instance, as places where we have had to work some to scare up someone to pump fuel, even in the middle of the day.

Loyds, here are a couple of observations that may help to allay some of your anxiety about fuel: First, we've never gotten "bad" fuel at any of these places - not to say it can't happen, but it hasn't to us. Second, in reviewing my fuel logs, I see that the most fuel we ever burned between fuel stops was 41.4 gallons, which means I've never been below about 15 gallons in reserve on the Inside Passage. But your concern is well placed. Very bad idea to run out of fuel in the middle of nowhere.

Hartley Bay was a completely modern fueling facility in 2006, and so strategically located, it is hard to imagine making this cruise if it were not there.

Very true, and it has two very nice dock dogs.

Also, it has no ordinary roads or streets. Houses are connected by a grid of board walks. No cars. Just ATVs and bikes.

Larry, thanks for the additional fuel stops. I'll add them to my consolidated list.

I had also forgotten to mention Sullivan Bay in the Broughtons - still offering fuel, right?

Yes, Sullivan Bay has fuel, I forgot it too.

Port McNeill will have the lowest price for the area, by as much as $0.25/liter.

Because this thread is now linked to another one about planning an IP trip, I want to add a comment about Hartley Bay. HB recieves fuel by barge. It's not unusual to have to wait some for delivery. On our more recent trip (2014), Hartley Bay was out of fuel for at least several days (maybe more than a week). As noted above, Kitimat also has fuel, and it is serviced by road so fuel is almost certain to be available. BUT, Kitimat is about 100 miles round trip from Hartley Bay. Soooo - you don't want to arrive at Hartley Bay without enough fuel to get you at least to Kitimat unless you really don't mind a possibly very long unplanned layover in Hartley Bay.
