I need to find a place to buy alcohol for my stove on my C-dory. I've looked all around New Orleans. Can anyone give me any suggestions?
Thank you

You might try a paint or hardware store for denatured alcohol, an auto store for iso-heet, (not regular heet), or a liquor store for grain alcohol _________________ Patti and Barry

Like Brent said, we just go to Wal Mart and buy denatured alcohol in the paint section

Who would have thought you'd have a hard time finding alcohol in New Orleans? When I've been there, it seems to find me. _________________ Roger on Meant to be |

A drunk that smelled like a brewery got on a bus one day. He sat down next to a priest. The drunk's shirt was stained, his face was full of bright red lipstick and he had a half-empty bottle of wine sticking out of his pocket. He opened his newspaper and started reading. A couple minutes later, he asked the priest, "Father, what causes arthritis?"
"Mister, it's caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol, and contempt for your fellow man," the priest replied.
"Imagine that," the drunk muttered. He returned to reading his paper.
The priest, thinking about what he had said, turned to the man and apologized: "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to come on so strong. How long have you had arthritis?"
"I don't have arthritis, Father," the drunk said, "but I just read in the paper that the Pope does." |

Thank you for all your help. I went to Walmart here in town and they said they didn't carry. I went to sporting goods though. I will go back to the paint department.

Last gallon of denatured alcohol I bought was $15 at Home Depot compared to $30 at West Marine... and it doesn't soot or smoke either. Very happy to have found another source! _________________ Steve & Carmen

I have a question. do you have to use denatured alcohol or can you use something else? Susan does not like the smell of the denatured alcohol and wants to change to something else. Will medical alcohol work? or is the flash point different? _________________ Thomas J Elliott

Safety first thought first
The National Fire Protection Association has assigned a flammability rating of 3 (severe fire hazard) to isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and methanol (wood alcohol).
Both need to be kept in a tightly closed container to prevent vapor fumes
Isopropyl alcohol burns dirty and produces of carbon is m2cw |

It depends on what you mean by "medical alcohol".
If you mean "rubbing alcohol" the answer is no, as it is not ethyl alcohol, but isoprophyl alcohol, and actually a mixture of 68% to 99% isoprophyl alcohol and the rest water. The water will definitely limit it's "burnability" or combustibility in higher water concentrations. Plus, if Susan doesn't like the smell of ethyl alcohol and it's partially l burned by-products, the isoprophyl will be much worse.
If, however, you mean 100% ethyl alcohol (without any "denaturing" additives, then you're back to pure alcohol, and it will burn just fine. The problem here is that the Federal Government taxes all ethyl alcohol (liquor laws), and you have to buy pure alcohol, paying the full tax on it, unless you're a licensed medical, educational, or research institution, in which case you apply for a special permit to buy, hold, and use alcohol w/o paying the liquor tax.
"Denatured" alcohol is ethyl alcohol with (usually about 10% methyl alcohol (also called wood alcohol) added to make it undrinkable (poisonous). This is what is usually used as a stove fuel. Pure methyl (wood) alcohol will also work, but is more expensive to make.
Sorry this is such a confusing subject!
