Ah yes, Sears and Roebuck. On the bay when I was growing up and running around in boats, the saying was, "Go to Sears and Rowback." I remember Lawsons, Elgins, Sea Kings, and the Scott Atwater -with the self bailer. 95% of the big engines (35hp or bigger) were either Mercs or Johnson-Evinrude. And were their "camps" then! I was firmly established in the J-E camp. Then I married Cordell. He owns 6 Mercury outboards! I am out numbered. Crook He has KG 9's and KG 7's. One KG 7 he bought with his paper route money, and that motor still runs great. He has never, and never will, run his motors in salt water. That doesn't work well for me.

As for my choice, I could have gone with almost any of them. I have owned Johnsons, Evinrudes, Yamahas and a Suzuki. They have all been good motors. I would not hesitate to buy a Honda. But a Merc.....I guess it was the "camp" that I was in growing up, running around in boats.

"Honda's kicking outboard butt here . . ." -- not exactly -- the score is really 27-23 at this point. Clearly people are seeking alternatives to the Honda antiquated design . . .

Roberta: you are sure right about the camps, especially in FL where Kiekhauffer (I think I spelled that right) had his Mercury testing grounds. Right about the salt too - those early Mercurys could not take any of that, and that put me squarely in the Evinrude camp for years (had a 50 horse the size of a modern 250) at any rate, things have sure changed.

Well, I'll be
Here it is, 2am here on the Bay, the dog gets me up for a little night ramble, I can't sleep, so I decide to check in on C Brats...and find out that Tyboo has caught me out..I went to my Webster's 3rd International and found out that "contrarion" is, indeed, "contrarian"...And people ask me why i'm so sure I will love this new boat!

My 12 year old is gonna love this! And to make it worse, I really am a retired college professor!

I should learn not to mess with the master.

Man o live peeps!! Shocked Am I supposed to read all that Crook . OK, I might when I get time, but in a nutshell...and I been thinking about this ever since I left that "carburetor post" Laughing About what to say on the subject.

Your better off getting info from a source not connected with this site or C-Dory, in any way... (since C-D and Honda are in bed together) all your going to get around here from the most persuasive voices (very verbally talented and overly Brand loyal) is BS!!! Shocked BS about "how you really don't need 'EFI' for instance. You wait; day will come, when Honda comes out with EFI in some more models, and it will be the talk of the town here ...as if it were some new technology!! Rolling Eyes

I don't know if anyone is getting commission around here... but I sure ain't!, and I am not a dealer either, so put that in your pipe and smoke it...
Moon out... Disgust

Sure their "all good" but if: "There can be only One" Yamaha would easily take em all out!! WHAM!!! Wink OH... if I only had the time for the "can" I would love to have opened Wink

The onliest (is that a word Question ) thing that counts, is that when you pushes the button or turns the key, does it start? Does it get you out there, does it get you home? And, for most of us, is it not too expensive to maintain. Doesn't matter much who's decal is on the housing....

Sure is cold up here in Maine, can't wait for spring in Virginia and putting the boat back in water!!

Well, you could always move to Washington and boat twelve months out of the year (wearing your woolies part of the time, of course). And with the Washington - California weather flip-flop going on right now, you might not even need the woolies before long (it was pushing 70 in the Cascade foothills yesterday afternoon, fer cryin' out loud).

I have to say that I do love my Honda 90. But, sometimes I would trade my 9.9 for a good paddle.

The throttle tension sleeve lasted all but two weeks and the automatic choke has got to be some disgruntled designer's practical joke.

This poll is still running strong (like a Honda), so we'll leave it up for a while longer. It has set a CB record for the total votes, and is still getting a couple everyday.

I see on some other thread, somebody tried to hang the Honda tag line on a Mercury. It just didn't seem to fit. Maybe he should try out the Wallas mantra: "Wallas - turn it on, it shuts off, wait ten minutes, turn it on, turn it off, screw with it for a while, wait ten minutes, turn it on, use it, turn it off, pull the fuse because it didn't finish the shutdown cycle."
