Anybody hear anything lately about the smelt run? Shoot, if they stay out another year we can start trolling for them.

Aint no smelt to be found. We went and ran around on the river today and saw no Seagulls...no Seagulls, no smelt. We only saw two seals...the river is looking pretty quiet except for freighters....If the smelt ever show up we'll try get a bunch for yas

Food or bait or both? We used to eat smelt fried up in cornmeal occasionally...of course first they have to be there...

in the paper yesterday there was a big artical about the lack of smelt. It said that the commercial smelt folks have harvested a whopping 82 pounds so far this season...hard to believe

You're doing good to get those six smelt. Now you needs to load up that boat and bring them down to the Columbia and trade them in for Sturgeon

Oh yeah, that reminds me. I found out the other day that the reason for the smelt no show last year was that some college pranksters between the ocean and Portland completely depleted the run the previous year. Thus, no baby smelts made it out, so none came back. And no baby smelts last year means none this year, ad infinitum..... The Columbia smelt are extinct. That is pretty sad, but the one good part is that the feds have a line on the nutso professor that instigated the whole mess, and they will be making an arrest soon.

That young man should put them six smelt on eBay. He could make a bundle.

What? what does that mean? How can no smelt make it out to the big blue? Can you give some insight please?

B~C will explain............

(It's just a joke, but don't tell him. He's probably watching for the cops already. Two years ago, he had the guys in his Diesel Tech class collect smelt for him. Said it was for "extra credit". He brought me about 300 pounds of the things, and we haven't seen any in the river since.)

That group of students where smelt dipping maniacs, the last couple of years where duds for smelt dippers..but the runs have been duds also. At least I have some fresh smelt for this year, I just bought a half dozen off of e-bay..
gotta go, there's a Fish and Game truck outside with his light flashing....I may not have any time for the sturgeon derby either

SMELT ARE BACK, word is that they are in the Cowlitz. You can dip from the Columbia 7 days a week BUT the Cowlitz is the only tributary open and it's only open on Saturdays
