Can anyone tell me if the dimensions, threading and design of Racor & Sierra fuel filter elements allow them to be interchangeable?

Also include the Honda filters in that question.

We sell both brands here.
If you give me some part numbers I should be able to tell you if they are interchangeable.

I've used Mallory and Sierra interchangeably.

They both make many different filters and they are definately not all interchangeable.

Racor makes a number of different "heads" for their filter assemblies. Some of them are the same as the Sierra. As well as Mercruiser, BRP and others.

I haven't looked at a Honda filter, so don't know for sure. We usually use the Mercury Filter for installations because it is the same as many others, and is reasonable inexpensive for the whole kit. The exception to that would be Yamaha installations because of Yamaha's System Match warranty.

The reason I am asking is that I installed a Sierra fuel-water separator in the splash well last year and have been thinking I would like to have the Racor type I used to have with the clear bowl where you can drain off the water. So I was wondering if I could just install a Racor filter and clear bowl on the Sierra assembly.

There should be a racor model that fits the Sierra head. You may just have to open some racor units to see which one fits.

Racor makes the Honda filters, at least for the size C-Dory gave me. For a lot more info see Honda vs Racor Interchange .

I don't know if I would want a plastic style filter out in the elements might break ,crack with sunlight ,freeze etc

We use the 10 micron blue yamaha fuel filter all metal no plastic never had a problem Once we changed the pickup tubes and started changing filter every 6 months no problems

I'm having aluminum tanks made and want to move the fuel-water separator to the transom under the splashwell, so sunlight won't be a problem. I'd like to have the see-through bowl so I can see and drain the water if I need to.

My Sierra catalog says the 18-7986-1 is a kit containing one of 18-7775 bracket and one of 18-7945 filter.
You can replace that filter with Racor kit #B32013 which contains one of filter number S3213 and one of Plastic see-thru reusable bowl for outboard engine use only.
I hope this helps.
