So things are beginning to shape up a little. I'll continue to check in to things here, various ideas, and then make a concrete proposal for date and place.

Tyboo Mike:
Thanks for the thumbs-up on teachers. I'm finishing my 30th year this June and retiring. Our new C Dory will be a major part of our retirement plans.
Tom:
Thanks for all of your efforts! Maybe we should bring one of Airedales, too!

My schoolteacher wife reminds me that she'll be going to Colorado on family matters, so anytime in June should work for me.

Hey -- any of you eastern watermen(women) have a favorite crab cake recipe, handed down through the generations? Or is that like asking a Texan if they can fix a chili, or a New Englander if they can rustle up a chowder? We had some crab cakes once, down in Crisfield, that still cause heart palpitations. Maybe we could have a 'tasting' at the Gathering?
The Gathering ideas sound great!! _________________ El and Bill (former live-aboards)

El and Bill,
I can assure you that if crabs are running...(we usually have a big run in late May and early June, then they fall of until later in the summer. But we definitely will have crab cakes, and steamed crabs for pickin'
It has really been fun so far doing some of the brainstorming for this event. I think it is possible to have a really great group of people show.
So far I count 12 boats showing interest.

Count me in as lucky # 13 as being interested in joining the group . I cruised that area last summer and had a great time, especially liked Chestertown. |

OK, depending on when and where this takes place, we might be the second representatives from Ohio to make the trip. Just depends on drive time to the location and being able to bring the poochies along.

Minnow and Sea Dog.
Absolutely great. Regarding dogs...I will check that out with wherever we decide to group. I'm pretty sure it won't be a problem as long as we are all sensitive to the needs of others around us. Dogs are family on the EasternShore. By the way, this part of Maryland is extremely "nationalistic" about itself. Tried to secede from Maryland on more than one occasion. Favorite bumper sticker is " There is No Life West of The Eastern Shore"
I'll be in toucn as information develops.

Sallly's Sister
By the way,my interest in this is not altogether altruistic. What a great way for a new C Dory owner to gather information from the accumulated experience of all of you.
I think my wife is a bit concerned that my mania for this boat will take me off on some year long quest...I must admit that El and Bill's proposal for an Erie Canal trip in July makes me salivate..but we don't have a trailer...so for now that is out.
Talk to you all soon. |

Tom --
It is possible to cruise from Chesapeake to Erie Canal -- thru the C&O, down Delaware Bay, then a delightful cruise (sneak) along the NJersey shore (including Barnegat Bay), out into the ocean for a short run around the Point, under the Big Bridge, past Lady Liberty and the skyline of NCY (up thru Hell Gate and circumnavigate Manhattan, if you wish), then up the Hudson past the Palisades, and when you reach Troy, take a hard right turn, up the flight of locks, and into the canal. Are you on??
Steinbeck said something like, "God made hobos, to make other men yearn." |

Ell and Bill:
Your last post decribes a beautiful trip. I did the same except for the C&D Canal on my sailboat. Unfortunately, March of 1989 was a very rainy one and both the Hudson and Canal were full of flotsam. One day I had to change shear pins four times on my outboard.
They closed the Canal for three days, a first, and I was tied up to the wall at Troy for that period of time. It was hard to sleep due to all of the junk hitting the hull. I was afraid I would lose my rudder.
Seeing the Statue of Liberty was tremendous, knowing that my grandparents had seen the same thing on a far different boat a long time ago.
Also. rounding a bend to see West Point was a sight, as were the armories on islands in the Hudson and the mansions/private schools towering on the hillsides. I almost thought I would see Rip Van Winkle come walking down the bank.

Tom,
Don't sweat the incorrect name in your post. I don't take things all that seriously. Although, if you get to meet our one Schnauzer, you'll understand where the name comes from.

Can I order a "Favorite bumper sticker is " There is No Life East of The Cascades" ??? Believe me, there is not much life in eastern Washington. I lived in Gaithersburg for two years (NW of the Eastern Shore). Main problem with the Eastern Shore, the sun is supposed to set on the ocean, not rise!! |
