I guess this would be a good thing, at least for people under a Raymarine warranty. Not so sure about being a good thing for the future of marine electronics from an innovation and competitive pricing standpoint.

A recent update is available for the C-70, C-80, C90 series MFDs but take a look at the feature they removed before considering the update. It is highlighted in yellow on this page:

More important to me, I just sent in the autopilot computer to Raytheon for repair. We can only pray that nothing has changed in repair, since they did well (and good) last time.

BTW that overlay update just says that you now have to have an independent source of heading other than the GPS COG. I think that's good since it allows one to have an accurate overlay even if you're dead in the water.

Anyone know if the upgrade to the radar function also effects the E series in a prior saftware upgrade?

The last time I had my radar on and my E80, I seem to recall i couldn't get the radar and chart overlay to work. I didn't think much of it at the time, but now i'm wondering? If so, does anyone know if i just install one of these Fluxgate Compass Modules i can get my overlay back?

Thanks Jim

Greg, Thanks for posting the link,

Boris, How/Where would one get a second or "independent source of heading" from? other than the GPS COG input? Does this mean that one would need a second GPS or another fluxgate compass?

Thanks guys,

OK, maybe " a second source of heading" is vague. A GPS doesn't give the boats heading, just the course over ground (COG,) which better be pretty darn close to your heading. A fluxgate compass, as does a magnetic compass, reads the direction ones boat is pointing even when the boat is stationary. My autopilot came with a fluxgate compass, which plugs right into Raymarine equipment (has the correct electrical interface.) They cost (from Raymarine) $170.

I assume this change was made to keep the radar/chartplotter from becoming too confused when the boat was going slow or standing still.

Any compass with a NMEA output would be OK.
