The fishing was great last week in Ucluelet B.C. I was up there for five days and got fish everyday. We even got some halibut, that was a little slower and the fish were small. We got four kings a day all in the twenty to thirty pound range and the first day I was done in thirty minutes of fishing time. It never took more then three hours to get the four kings a day and that was when we started looking for bigger fish.
The weather kept us form going out one morning as it was blowing hard and really foggy, I can handle the fog and the wind but conditions were a bit over the top for my fish chumming partner. He had been sea sick the day before with the five to six footers with white caps that we slogged through for two hours to get to the fishing grounds.
The price for fuel at the dock was $1.10 per liter or $4.16 per gallon and on a typical day we would burn about 12 gallons running out and back. So all in all it did not brake the bank. The ferries are what kill you, truck and camper with the boat is $235.00 one way.
I will post some pictures when I up load them from the camera for those of you who need a fish fix.

Dan

Dan,
Sounds like you had a great trip. Did you camp at Island West? I am curious if the campground is still in operation. I haven't been there in two years but in 2008 there were rumors that it was to be turned into condos?

We had a group at Barkley Sound Aug 8-14, and duriing that time the fishing was NOT that good. We had to go offshore everyday to get the fish, other than an occasional one near Pill Pt. Most of the later action was on the banks, and on a spot people at McKay Bay Lodge called the Starfish, north of Ucluelet. Saw some big ones come in, but our boats didn't do much significant. Our 3 boats got 18 kings, 8 halibut, a handful of yellow rockfish, and a couple of coho, and no sockeye. Seems like the same story of being there "just between runs". Poett Nook was like a KOA camp with everything being quite a ways from dock space. Campers were jammed tight together, the bunkhouse was quite full, and the pay showers were malfunctioning most of the time. The fish cleaning station at Poett Nook was really excellent. Most of the others there were only getting fair fishing. We put on about 75 nautical miles per day per boat.

Fishing for Springs down the channel towards Port Alberni is slow. We are starting to see some at the marinas. The sockeyes are still jumping around but the bite has all but stopped. No Coho as of yet near Port Alberni.
Happy to hear you did well out there Dan.

Still working on the pictures, got to find where the little woman put the cable for uploading.
Ken, we did stay at Island West, they have done nothing with there condo plans and have put upkeep on the back burner also. The only real change was they started to charge for the freezer space and do not open until 8:00am. It would seem that they could do better then that when you are catering to a fishing crowd. If I remember correctly they were open at 6:00a.m. before. They also have a bear problem in the upper area with two bear trying to make off with coolers this year. So anyone staying there is almost forced to rent freezer space to keep their fish. I had to make a trip to Tofineo to have fish canned and shipped home this year.
Andrew should have given you a call when we spent the night in Port Alberni, but one of the party had a trailer problem and we spent most of the time finding parts and a portable welder guy to fix the tongue on his boat trailer, the tongue bent when he went over a set of railroad tracks too fast with his 36 foot motor home.
