First trip out this year on the way home after about 6 hours of running, my port engine just quit. It would restart easily, but when given any throttle, it would die. We idled home somtimes on one motor, sometimes on both until Port died again, all the way from Dangerous Passage to Whittier. Fortunately, we had 9 hours of absolutely perfect weather for this little adventure.

Anyway, I took it to the Honda dealer in Anchorage. They kept it for about a week, could not get it to stutter or die. So they took everything apart, replaced the thermostat, replaced the little carb innards, new fuel filters, new plugs, the whole tune-up, checked out everything they could find.

Since then, every once in a while Port will stutter then catch, then run fine for a couple of hours. Twice it has stuttered and lost power and refused to rev above idle. When I turn it off, wait a couple of minutes, then restart it will run fine again for a while.

Any ideas on what the heck is going on?

I they had the motor off of the boat in the shop, they weren't using your fuel system. I'd check for air leaks somewhere in your gas lines to that motor. If they had the whole boat then..... Question

I had some trouble with twin Honda 40s--- my port engine would act the same.
Dealer couldn't find it because he always used a portable tank in his shop.
I cleaned the tanks and replaced all my fuel lines. The engines ran great after that.

Goo luck with your engine problem!

This discussion brings up an interesting question:

Air induction into a fuel supply system to the engine is usually a problem. Is it a greater problem, or less, with modern electronic fuel injection than with a traditional engine with a carburetor? And why?
