Been some time since we've had this topic but I've used G mail (a Google product) for a couple of months now, in parallel with a yahoo mail product and found G mail superior, particularly in the Spam area. If anyone wants to try it, no cost, no committment, etc. etc. e-mail me with your e-mail address and I'll send you an invite through the system. Or post a "yes" here and I'll e-mail you to get your address. It's got some neat features.

More info on G-mail. Just got one response, any more?

If you haven't already heard about Gmail, it's a new search-based webmail service that offers:

- 1,000 megabytes (one gigabyte) of free storage
- Built-in Google search that instantly finds any message you want
- Automatic arrangement of messages and related replies into
"conversations"
- Text ads and related pages that are relevant to the content of your messages

Gmail is still in an early stage of development. But If you set up an account, you'll be able to keep it even after we make Gmail more widely available. We might also ask for your comments and suggestions periodically and we appreciate your help in making Gmail even better.

Not necessarily an endorsement by me but it seems to work and be a good thing.

Charlie

Along with the good comes some bad...

I was a big GMail devotee when it first came out - much nicer than the other free alternatives. I'd still feel that way, except for one major annoyance - extended outages.

On two occasions, I'd go to check my email, and received a "we're sorry, your email is not available, we're working to fix the problem as quickly as possible" message. Were this a brief outage, no big deal. But one time it lasted 5 days, the next time, 2 days. During this period, not only could I not get my email, but email sent to the address never made it.

I don't know how widespread the problem was - it wasn't system-wide, but many folks were affected. After the second time, I abandoned the use of my account.

I guess that's the nature of "Beta" products...once GMail is available to the masses, I'd assume problems like these would be farther and fewer between.

Bill, I'm sure you're right. I have never noticed an outage but have just begun using it more. I usually use my free yahoo account but it's collecting so much spam these days that I'm starting to shift over. Even yahoo gives you a lot of storage space now so it's not an issue like it used to be. GMail gives you a gigabite, I don't think it'll ever be necessary to delete any mail, ever. We'll see how it works in the long run, I'm surprised it's still in Beta testing, maybe because of problems...

Susan, sent you an e-mail, I need your e-mail address to send you an invite, send one via the site and I'll get you an invite off so you can try it.

Update for April:

Gmail has improved considerably since the last post. They've also added POP capability as well as mail forwarding, and reliability seems to have improved - at least lately.

One indicator that they're closer to being ready for prime time; Gmail users now get to invite up to 50 people to join. All one needs is their email address, plus first and last name.

Like Home Depot for hardware stores or Walmart for consumables, they want to become the Borg of the internet. "You will be assimilated."

Anybody who wants an invite, just PM me or most any Gmail user on here with your data.
