I posted in the past that I wanted to add a couple of overhead electric windshield wipers to our 22 cruised and leave the manual ones in place for backup. I know there are some of you out there with overhead electric wipers and I need to know the make and model, sweep, arm and blade length.
Not long ago I saw a new CD22 locally with factory installed wipers exactly as I described but I stupidly forgot to ask the owner what they were. I emailed the factory to ask what ones they install but they never replied. So I emailed a C Dory dealer to ask the same question....and they never replied.
Last week we were out in a really bad lump. The waves were breaking over the bow and the windshield was constantly needing wiping and I knew that I couldn't forget about it anymore. (The boat handled it beautifully by the way)
So is there anyone out there who can tell me what they have (as described) so I can purchase and install the right ones?
Cheers Beer

Hello Tom, I bought the Ongaro unit from Defender and mounted it through the old hand op wiper hole at the bottom of my window. I see no reason it could not be mounted up above so long as you plan the new hole for it's 90 or 110 degree sweep arc. It is by no means fast (like an auto wiper). Its main function, I would say, is to clear an occasional spray or give you a clear view every couple seconds in a constant storm. The good is that they are one of the smallest units. I carry a small spray bottle of water and white vinegar solution to spray from the pilot side window to clear up accumulated small salt build ups.

I had real trouble getting to my hand op wiper because of 2 electronic devices on top of the console hence the electric and I am satisfied though surprised at the slow speed.

Tom,

I had the pleasure of visiting with OG Dave yesterday on board his new Marinaut and noticed he had top mounted electric wipers. He may be more responsive than your previous 2 tries. Contact him at:

dave@tolandmarine.com

Or check his website at

www.tolandmarine.com

YOu may want to give thought to just buying his whole package, it sure looks like he did a fine job, and I bet everything works. OH, NO, I'm sure it does.

At the top of this page click on "Search" and enter Windshield wipers and you will see at least 7 posts on windshield wiper problems. Hope this will help you. Laughing

Tom;
Check out Sea Angel's upgrades on wipers. They can apply to a CD22.

Thanks for your input everyone.
I have searched the library on the subject and as yet have not hit the nail on the head.
Art: Your system is what I am intending to do....only on a 22. Different window sizes I'm sure.
I was sure that someone who has this setup.....or a dealer who knows what works would chime in.
I'll continue with my quest....maybe the right person will read this.

Tom-

I changed over to electrics from the manuals on my '87 CD-22 Cruiser.

I could not mount the new motors above the windows inside because of the interference from the bottom of the electronics shelf, so had to mount them in the holes already established for the manual wipers from below the window. (I could have cut out a section of the electronics shelf to allow mounting of the motors, but choose not to do so.)

This may not be a problem on later models, particularly a boat with a High-Top cabin, I don't know.

Do you appear to have room to mount motors above your windows?

Various motors and their wiper arms will work. Most cost from $100-$200 per unit, but are well worth it.

The installation has to be planned out carefully so that the geometry of the wipers will work.

I'd consider pantographic wipers if I had to do it over again. They have a double wiper arm set up , so that the blade moves in a parallel motion to the window frame, instead of an arcing one. They cover a much larger part of the window. You can see them most often of busses and trucks.

Good Luck with your project!

Joe. Teeth Thumbs Up

Thanks Joe........I remember that you replied with those concerns when I first posed the question way back. Yes, there is plenty of room and interference with the shelf is not an issue. I agree, pantographic wiper arms would be ideal and since the geometry so is critical my strategy was to copy exactly what has worked for the factory and other brats.

HI How do you take off the wiper arm so you can get to the motor ??I'm trying to open up the motor and use some penatrating oil and try to fix or take it to a elec rewinder any thoughts or help whould be appreciated

There seems to be a little allen skrew which I have taken out and tried to undue the nut which seems impossible .I've tried BP blaster and wd -40 to no avail . I'm almost ready to cut the suckers off and use rain -x and go back to manual wipers

I never had trouble with my manual wipers

The wipers on the C dorys I have seen are AFI Marinco . A call to them might yield info on what C Dory and Fluid Marine ordered from the as OEMs . They may have records of the model . The one they bought the most of would likely be the 19/22 model.
