Fishing in The Rain

I have been reluntant to go out fishing when it is raining like it is today.My 1985 22 C-Dory has no subfloor just two bilge pumps that i have installed. There probably is no reason for this but i no not like surprises when i am out boating. What should i expect..standing in an inch of water while out fishing for the day with the bilge pumps evacuating the rest of the rain water.Thanks Tug

Would take one heckova lot of rain to overpower the bilge pumps. After the fish are under water, why shouldn't you be standing in it.

I'm not a fisherperson but I have heard that some of the best fishing is when it is raining. Wink

Send a little of that rain our way, was 102 degrees here yesterday and we haven't had any measureable rain in a couple of weeks. Have no water to drink am reduced to drinking gin and tonic Cocktail

With a lime of course!!

Hope you get some rain soon, we never get that kind of high temperatures here.I didn't think that going out fishing in the rain would end up swamping my boat but it is always good to hear from other people with similar boats and what they experienced. Thanks Tug

Hi Tug,

We've fished in the rain (winter season) a number of times last year and we enjoyed it for several reasons:
1. No one else was out except for some bass boats and they looked miserable....to think I did that before.
2. soaked bait or trolled and head into the cabin to make coffee or lunch - you're not sitting outside in the elements.
3. If throwing plugs, the rain gear made it a bit cumbersome.
4. I have dri-dek in the cockpit plus we wore rubber boots. I remember it being somewhat slippery. Be sure to wear something that can grip the cockpit sole.
5. If fishing alone, wear your lifejacket at all times.

On one ocassion, the rain was light and steady all day. Nothing the bilge pump couldnt handle 1/2-1" at most. Another ocassion was off and on heavy rain+winds. Again, not an issue. Just be sure your wipers are good when running. Rain-X helps.

I would caution, however, to call it a day if there is a lighting storm. Graphite rods should be thrown into the cabin and you should head in.

Thanks for the information... I used to do alot of fishing in the rain on my StarCraft Islander but it had a cockpit liner and i wasn't concerned about standing in any water. An inch or two of rain is not too bad.I will invest in a pair of good rubber boots....as for the window wipers i have the old manual style...i never got around to buying electric ones yet. My next project i think....i will set the rods between turns of the wiper blades for now.Wearing a life jacket is a good idea also. Thanks Tug

You won't be in an inch or two or rain. The bilge pumps will keep it much lower than that. In my 22 the water tends to collect near the bulkhead where there's a bilge pump. The remainder of the cockpit has just a thin film of water. I also have two bilge pumps - one in the depression under the bulkhead and one in the depression near the stern. I have both on auto switches with manual override. If the water builds up a little more than I want, I shift weight to drain water into the bilge and hit the manual switch (mine are in the cockpit). I RARELY (need to do that). If you put some dri-deck or other tiles in the cockpit, you'll not be standing in water. I found some tiles at Home Depot that are like dri-deck (but 1/4 the price). That's what I use and I fish in the rain a lot.
