If I remember correctly, Martin built and installed that davit himself.

Martin, is this true?

Has anyone installed a davit lift off center towards the transom on a Tomcat transom bracket?

Brent,
I find that putting the davit on the port side, all of the way aft in the cockpit (just enough to clear the lazarette door, and then the brace on the railing. This allows me to pick up outboards, the generator and even an inflatable (rolled up) and put them on the swim step or an outboard onto a dinghy.

The second position is on the aft side of the cabin house--outboard of the head--with a removable foot and support bolted through the lip of the cabin house.

I thought about putting another position in the cockpit by the starboard boarding area, but the position which lifts items to the top of the boat, will put items from the dock to the cockpit.

The reason I have the Garhauer davit is because of a bad back. I am not putting any more than about 60 lbs of dinghy on the cabin roof. I can slide it up there if there are two of use. If just one person, the davit works for me to work as the second person and lift a majority of the weight of the boat.

You can adjust the height, only by changing the angle of the arm--there are two or possibly three positions. One is at right angles, the other up higher, but of course closer.

Brent,
I must be missing something--I believe that all of the Tom Cat 255's come with a diving type of swim ladder (at least all that I have seen--it may be a common option)--Although my davit would not reach to lift a person from between the engines, it will reach to lift a person either over the side of the boat, or over the port side of the swim step.

Were you thinking of lifting diving gear, pots or something like that? My only concern about mounting the davit on the engine bracket, is that it is not far up to the railing for a brace and the upper bearing of the davit. Mine is bolted to the upper cocpit side- about 24" up from the ball mount.

No it is just a general question. The bracket is sturdy and wide, and several possible attachment points. I wondered if it had be done and ease of operation. thanks

I use the pick up truck type of davit Brent illustrates for my Duroboat. Its weight is about 300 lbs--and I have an Armstrong electric which (no relation to the bracket)--the lower pipe which takes the load, is heavy tubing. Yes, you could make a similar type of davit for the outboard bracket on the Tom Cat. One problem might be the thickness of the top deck of the Armstrong bracket--you can resolve this problem with a backing plate if necessary. The other problem would be metals. You can use aluminum--but most of these are steel--some are glavanized. You would have to isolate this from the aluminum bracket--and keep it free of rust. You could go the real expensive way--and make it out of Stainless (I did this on the Cal 46 and had a davit to lift 150 lb outboards with--very simlar to what you illustrated, but it had a tubing mout welded to the base of a large radar arch on the stern of the Boat. All it takes is $$--and the space on the bracket. Most of use use what is available, but for example I had the bracket for the base which mounts on the cabin side for the Garhauer at a local machine shop for about $65. Lots of machine shops will will make anything which you can dream up.

Getting back to the original concept of this post, If I was making the turn over type of system, I would make a frame work--winch the boat up to the framework and then flip the entire framework, rather than just two hoisting points and gin poles--but the issue becomes weight--SS looks nicest--but aluminum can be a bit lighter (but has to be heavier guage to take the loads).

Hello All: I'm JB and my partner and I are new owners of a 25' Tomcat. We happy and excited to have her up and running and are trying to figure out a davit system for our dinghy. I've been reading past posts here. When looking for our new cat, we looked at an Arrowcat - which had a davit system that was a cradle that sat over the outboards & swim latter. Anyone ever heard of something similar for the Tomcat?
