One additional enhancement to this mod might be to add a sliding curtain, as on the Tom Cat. Lori closes the curtain often when taking naps during the day.

Yeah, I have to agree. Opening up the v-berth area greatly improves the air circulation and does not affect the structural integrity at all. Ours has been open now for two years and other than small gel coat crazing has shown no sign of problems.
I haven't been able to get around to putting a nice trim on it though. The trim material that is still on the starboard side is not available in wide enough widths to fit over the cutout portion because of the 3/4 plywood that is used as a core. Ours is a 25 so a 22 bulkhead may be different thickness.
Go for it.

Yep... have to agree that Brother Mike's boat GYPSY is much more open as is Foggy Dew....from my "Coasty" brother Rick and Donna. I like the change on both boats. Like Bob said....go for it!!!

To the skippers of Foggy Dew and Gypsy,
Really like your mods. Am looking hard at doing the same to my 22 Cruiser this winter. Would like your thoughts on removing the entire port side bulkhead and shelf and the entire shelf over the entryway to berths. Result would look something like the opening in the Classic Angler photos. Understand that it'll drastically reduce shelf space. However, I'd like to have the area above my face/head on the port berth open. Any other issues you'd anticipate? Thanks Bill _________________ Bill K. |

Offhand I can't think of any big issues to removing that much of the shelf. You'd obviously have to re-route wiring and fabricate the supports, but the big thing is get in there and think, think, think!
Think about all the various ways you may get the result you want before you start cutting. I spent a lot of time just lying in the berth and sitting on the deck going over ways to do it.
Keep us posted and take pics...I forgot to do that during the process.

If you find a good way to solve the problem of removing the the seat back for the aft facing forward seat, I would be interested in what you come up with.
I like this project right up to the point where Kathleen and I sit down to eat or play a game of cards. _________________ Capn Steve & 1st Mate Kath

I'm thinking of something along the lines of the reversible seat on the Tom Cat adapted to the 22. The B-C album shows a mod to give him more helm room -- same idea might work on the other side.

I like the Gypsy mod, especially the swivel seat; my first mate would love that. However, the second mate would have to find a place to sleep or I’d have to come up with another way to make the dinette a sleeper. Indeed this has got me to thinking; I like the idea of a look-forward seat but don’t especially want to deal with the set-up and repositioning of the factory modification.
If there was a way do the Gypsy mods and preserve the dinette sleeper arrangement that would be great! _________________ Jay

Warren, the sliding base to the forward seat on my 22 has a teak rail attached along its length on the table side. My table hinges in the center and has a slide underneath which slips into a spaced gap in the teak rail. Borrowing on this idea, a teak railing of the same design could be added to the bow side of the sliding base and a removable seat back that the cushion would snap to could be slipped into place and secured at the top somehow. I would be inclined to add a few inches of back tilt. The the extra board , if flat, could be stored under the cushions up front when not in use. |

Triple J, the above design would save the third or second sleeping area as well. On our two week trip I slept in the dinette every night and we left our gear on one side of the cuddy. I tend to want to see where we are (not drifting and such) and get up first anyway. This mod would let us actually see each other which would be nice. |
