Navigating the Mississippi: Being in the channel on the Mississippi River means staying between the red and green buoys.

Nun Buoy: These cone-shaped buoys are always marked with red markings and even numbers. They mark the edge of the channel on your starboard (right) side when entering from open sea or heading upstream.

Can Buoy: These cylindrical-shaped buoys are always marked with green markings and odd numbers. They mark the edge of the channel on your port (left) side when entering from open sea or heading upstream.

Hello from Guttenberg,

Yes, the agenda will be posted on Monday with what is scheduled so far.

Also see below an additional feature we worked out today with Tex and Sharon.

Stay tuned.

Regards,

Ron Fisher

Ron, We will take the short southerly cruise on Saturday with the gang.

The part of the river from the Twin cities south was one of our favorites when we did the entire length from the headwaters to New Orleans 2 years ago. We were on our small Catamaran Cruiser houseboat for that trip. This will be our first trip in the new to us (1989) C Dory.
Anyone is welcome to join us on the trip north. We have no set itinerary, Just north for 3 or 4 days and 3 days back to Guttenberg. It is 225 river miles to St. Paul. If we can go at least 55- 60 miles a day we should make St. Paul. We usually can make 50-60 miles a day in our houseboat that has a top speed of 8, so it should not be a problem in the C Dory. If we dabble at points of interest along the way and don't make it all the way to St Paul, that's fine too. Because we know a place not far from the marina in St. Paul that has a very tasty grilled Walleye dinner, we are at least going to try to make it that far..

After our return to Guttenberg we are trailering west for the Lake Powell C-Brat gathering and anyone is welcome to tag along to Lake Powell as well.

Tex and Sharon

Hi Tex,

I will be posting the Guttenberg Gathering itinerary next week, which by the way is very flexible.

Your suggestion of heading north on Sunday is a great idea and something that can be added to the itinerary if you are willing.

There is a suggested cruise heading south (about 25 miles) on Saturday for lunch and back for Bar-B-Q dinner that evening.

Please advise your thoughts.

The Upper Mississippi is one of the fine cruises in America. Holding a Gathering at Guttenberg, Iowa is a marvelous idea. It would focus attention on the Mississippi and give folks with access and an interest in the River a chance to meet and share experiences and friendship.

For those contemplating attending such a Gathering, we would suggest a perusal of the following threads about cruising the Upper Mississippi:

http://cruisingamerica-halcyondays.com/towns.htm - This is a tale about the history of towns along the Upper Mississippi.

http://cruisingamerica-halcyondays.com/missgeo.htm - And this is a tale of the geology that is the reason for the Mississippi River.

http://cruisingamerica-halcyondays.com/mwgath.htm - and this is an account of the First MidWest C-Dory Gathering. A little history.

Keep up the idea of another Mississippi Gathering - it will be a great shared time together in a wonderful part of the country.

Guttenberg Gathering Up Date:

Paul Talsma just advised, “We'll bring an assortment of bottle beer, including some from the Potosi Brewery so the out-of-towners can sample some local brews”.

Anyone attending wanting to bring “their favorite brand/s of beer” are very welcome to do so, we will furnish the ice etc.

Thank you Paul, sounds like the party plans are coming together.

Best regards,

Ron, Connie & Bear Fisher

Marc,

Thank you and Wefings Marine so much for helping us out by sending "good will" items to be share by those attending.

It's the suppliers and supporters of gatherings that make the added difference between a success and a great success.

At this point I figure the boats names will be put in a hat and drawn out for each item, that way each boat will go home with something/s.

Any suppliers or individuals wanting to send "good will" items to be shared by those attending this gathering can send items to my office;

Ron Fisher
PO Box 1208
406 South First Ave.
Marshalltown, Iowa 50158

Items must arrive in Marshalltown on or before Wednesday, September 8th to be included with this gathering.

Marshalltown is the location of my day job, I live in Guttenberg every Friday through Sunday.

Hello from Jim on Dutch Treat,
I just was wondering if there was any interest in heading down to see the Aquarium in Dubuque. Not sure if everyone would want to do that for a day but just a idea. But you may have everything planned out already. We plan to leave Hudson WI on Tuesday morning to start down river. Looking forward to our first C-Dory gathering ever.

Jim

Hi Jim,

I’m taking the liberty to post your message/question on the thread since it’s a great question and an example of how we as a group will make plans for the gathering as we go along.

The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium is an outstanding place to visit (in Dubuque, Ia, by land it’s 38/40 miles south, south east of Guttenberg, approximately 34 by river with one lock through)
www.mississippirivermuseum.com

The museum/aquarium is accessible from the river through the “Dubuque Ice Harbor” (Diamond Joe’s Casino is next door) which does have temporary docks for those attending the museum/Casino complex.

For the gathering, we have boats arriving at different times and except for a cruise scheduled on Saturday, I’ve tried to keep everyone's schedule as open a possible for exploring trips like this.

If someone has a idea and others want to tag along, what a great way to schedule an event with different groups out on their own adventures.

Anyway, great idea, we will see what feedback bounces back.

Best regards,

Ron Fisher

We have left the great state of Texas and are presently anchored in an asphalt marina on I-35 3 hours south of the twin cities.
We have decided to splash the boat at St Paul tomorrow and will head down river and see everyone at Guttenberg Friday afternoon.
We have no set schedule and will go back upriver to St. Paul on Sunday or Monday should anyone want to tag along for a few days.
