I'm looking for suggestions/ideas on adding a wiper to the center window. Has anyone ever added a center wiper?

Marc, will that unit pivot up as the window is opened?

I remember some posts where it was done.
Just mount it centered above the window.
The arm will fold up when the window is opened, and come back down when closed.
Don't have the time to search it out for you, but I know the thread exists.
Might have been done on a 25 or a TC, but doesn't matter, as long as there's room to mount the motor above the window.
Consider both the inside and outside components of the motor, shaft, and arm to decide if it fits.
Wanted to do it on my 22, but would have had to cut out a section in the front of the electronics shelf to accommodate the motor body, and move some components. Decided I don't use the wipers enough to justify the effort involved.

Warren,
Ask Les what he puts on the Rossies. Ours pivots out to horizontal and comes back by itself (mostly). Its a pantographic arm. The opther two have fresh water washers as well

From Marc's link it looks like we have the "1000/heavy duty" models on the Tomcat. I will verify the next time I'm out and explore more closely what would be involved in terms of mounting.
Part of the process would be in deciding where/how to wire the switch. I would prefer one switch for all wipers. Having two side by side (as offered stock) is no big deal but having a third would require some thought. In my case I usually need just a burst of wiper (from rough water spray) and seldom need constant wipers.
Thanks for the replies! |

Matt, Warren,
Funny you should mention this project. We always come home with a list of things to do to the boat over the winter. Right up top is a center window wiper and fresh water washers for all front windows. It will be interesting to see who drills the first hole! Whoever it is, take lots of photos. _________________ Roger

We had the factory install a center wiper on the last Tomcat we sold. Same motor and arm as the side windows, and works great. _________________ Matt Gurnsey

The fresh water rinse would also be nice...let us know what you find for options. |

Don't forget to use "Rain-x" on the windshields regularly. Salt water beads up just like fresh. The washer would be nice, if you just get a little spray on the window and want to get the salt off. So far we have avoided putting a 3rd wiper or the washer on, and just use Rain-X. _________________ Bob Austin

Bob,
Right you are about Rain-X. However, we found that in a light spray or foggy drizzle, the water doesn't bead up as well as in a downpour or at high speed. Last month, we found many times when we wished we could have just sprayed down the front windows. We thought of you when visiting Sutherland Bay in August. |

Be aware that many of the wiper systems for boats are not designed to have the wiper arm lifted away from the glass like an automobile wiper - i.e. flipped out... Doing so stretches the hold down spring and the wiper loses much of its ability to bear down on the glass leaving the wiping streaky... There was a lengthy article in Passagemaker on this issue...
Now, if the wiper(s) discussed here are designed to have the arm flipped out, then you are good to go... _________________ denny-o |
