The recent discussion about canvas engine covers reminds me that I need to repair and repaint the cowling (removable cover, is that the name of the part?) on one of my Yamaha 150s. It has a ding in the top where it hit something when I was tilting it up. I had a local gelcoat expert work on my boat in the spring but she for some reason would not touch the engine covers. Any ideas out there?

Thanks,
Warren

While The Yamaha cowls are a fiberglass type product, I beleive they are painted. Treat them like an auto body repair, and use matching paint to refinish the area.

Your local Yamaha dealer should have aerosol paint in stock.

Warren, if you decide to replace it, be sitting down when the dealer gives you a price. One of my shirt-tail relatives backed a Yamaha 250 into a piling and put a nice crack in it. Needless to say, it was repaired and not replaced...

Take it to one of those Dent Master places. I know there is one in Bellevue, probably something similar closer to Anacortes.

I beleive the colw on that motor is in the $800-1000 range. I'd have to check, but they are spendy.

After Ivan, I picked up a boat with a Yahama 115, where the cowling was toast. Cost for the 115 was $1200 +--I expect a bit more for the 150? I think that a good shop could easily match the paint.

I broke the cover on my little 2hp Yamaha and the price for a new one was over one third the cost of the new motor and it was plastic, not fiberglass. Fortunately the cover is similar to the color of duct tape.

Yup, manufacturer's want an arm, a leg, and your first born's medical education $$$ for something they think you can't do without!

Got quoted $1200 for a bottom half, factory replacement leather seat covreing for one seat for my BMW Z3 today. Will be cheaper to replace the four center panels in both seats with new matching leather, including both the cost of 1 full tanned and dyed cow's hide and all labor involved. $1200 vs $600! Angry The nerved of some business operators!
