I just bought a used 2.5 hp Suzuki outboard for our dinghy. It didn't come with an owners manual and I want to change the engine oil so I know how old it is.
Problem is.....I can't tell which, if any, one off the several bolts at the base is the drain bolt. I kind of wonder if you are just meant to open the filler cap and pour the oil out......since the motor is so small.
If anyone can help me out I'd greatly appreciate it and if there are any tips you have on these motors I'd like to know them too.

Cheers Beer
Tom

Tom,

Try googling for a manual on the engine. I found the Hondas there, so I suspect that there is a good chance to find the Suzukis, too.

Steve

(on edit: I just tried a google search and did not come up with anything. Sorry)

Thanks for trying Steve......I didn't think of that.

Another question that I forgot in the original post is.....Does it take regular 10W30 oil or the synthetic stuff?

Thanks in advance,
Tom

Sorry Tom. I gave it a shot but I couldn't find my manual for the 2.5. I found the manual for the DF90, the DF9.9 but not the 2.5.

Regarding the oil, the manuals for the larger Suzuki's all suggest SAE (or NMMA FC-W) 10w-40.

Good luck in your search.

Thanks Jazzmanic

What a dummy I am......I should have had all my questions lined up in the original post but I just thought of another.

In the middle of the sight glass there is a red dot. Is that the level to which you fill the oil to......or is that the warning level if the oil is down to that point?
So.....do you fill to the top of the sight glass or to the red dot?

When I got the motor the oil level was well below the red dot but still in sight.

Tom,

There's a graphic right next to the oil sight window. It shows the high oil position and low oil position. If you don't have that graphic, the star-like object in the window is the measuring point. The high and low points are the upper and lower points on the circle in the middle of the "star", not the star points. And the red dot is right in the middle. So it sounds like you're low. I hope that makes sense.

Hello Tom...
Go to <http://store.brownspoint.com/df2.5/fig002-2_50607.asp> and you will see a drawing of a 2.5 Suzuki. Scroll down to the parts list and find the drain plug number. Key it out with the picture and change some oil!

Good Luck,
Rick

Tom I have a 2.5 suzuki with a manuel. I will check on it today and get back to you.
I bought it for the Pudgy and does not work. I needed the long shaft. It is a better motor than the 2 horse Honda. Guess I should sell it. It is new but dusty.

this spec sheet says either 10w-30 or 40 is OK.

We don't have a 2.5 in stock right now, so I acn't check, but I think it is a largish phillips head screw on the bottom of the motor block.

Oil is 10w30 or 10w40. Any good oil can be used, but we recommend the Suzuki oil because of the corrosion inhibitors and zinc present that is not in automotive oil.

I picked up my new Suzuki 2.5 from Sportcraft last week. What a sweet little motor. It is a lot quieter than the Honda, has a Fwd - Neutral gear, and is water cooled. I think this is going to be a winner.

I am thinking of buying the 2.5 Suzuki. Was it a winner? Are you still pleased with yours?

Martin.

I had a 2.5 Suzuki--great motor! More like a 3 to 3.5 in "push power"--compares with a 3.5 Merc two stroke I owned. No issues in about 100 hours--sold it with the C Dory 25. (Maybe should have kept it!)....

As I recollect the screw for the drain was labeled "oil" or "drain"....
