Joe,
Ol' boat poor Duster sure knows the feeling! Cheery, Tyboo1, etc. (oooh, too many etc.) were all great boats. The old guy finally got some smarts and ordered a new 22 C Dory... and if he had kept his first new 22 CD he'd be happy as one of you super-rich Californiian's sharing his loot here in WA.
Now if he sez this is the last one, Mike's comment from OR, Charlie's comment from the dreary coast, and Lady CLou's skeptic look, would make one wonder, eh? But he sez this be it.

That promise and $3.79 will buy you a Wildcat IPA! I thought you were starting to like the Skagit Orca...Well, can't argue with the choice of a C-Dory 22, now can I!! Sawdust wrote: |

Pat,
The Skagit Orca is a GREAT boat. Just ended up being too much boat for this old geezer who boats alone and has no use for all of the great amenities and vroom. And of course with the 22 CD my Brat buds will no longer think I've become a blue blazer burgee type. My SYC years as Parade Marshal and house committee chairman still give me nightmares.
The beer tastes the same on either boat, and Cynthia will still give me a hug -- maybe. Jon and Catman will be here tomorrow, and we'll do some 22 talk.
My fav fishing area is the west coast of Vancouver Island. We used to run up the outside, but my rough water days are in the past, and towing the Orca to the NW corner of the Island would require a new tow rig. Maybe our famous nerd can buy me a twin to his new jewel!! Towing the 22 is no prob. as long as some jerk doesn't swipe my bow roller. Bummer, that.
Hope you get her fixed soon. There's a great glass repair shop right here in River City, but more better you go to the real experts at the factory.

Dusty,
I'm surprised you didn't opt for a 25. You've had 2 or 3 22's, the Tomcat and the Orca, but no 25's on the list. Unless of course you count the almost 25 that you were looking at before the Tomcat. Actually there are probably a number of us that would rather you got a 25, that way in a year or so when you upgrade there would be a very nicely broke in, well equipped Dusty special 25 we could all chase after . Seriously though, you must think the 22 is pretty special to keep coming back to it!
Cheers

Dusty,
Congratulations on your choice for a new boat!! For your boating style and area the 22 may be the best choice.
I still like my 22 after 14 years(14 years!!!), but after riding in the Helen O the 25 is looking real nice. _________________ Larry H

Good choice, Dusty! While there's something to be said for every C-Dory out there, like you, I just find the 22 a perfect combination. Glad you came back to it (again...)
Now...not that anyone's keeping track ( ), but we need a bit of chronology here just so the new folks can be amazed along with the rest of us. According to my memory, your C-Dory/Orca history goes something like this:
- 22 Cruiser (C-Salt)
- Tomcat (C-Salt)
- 22 Angler (Cheery)
- 22 Angler (Little Buddy)
- 22 Cruiser (TyBoo)
- Skagit Orca 24
- 22 Cruiser (coming soon...)
Man...you've set the bar pretty high. And you've performed a valuable community service for the rest of us...when the time comes to upgrade, convincing the spouses just got a whole lot easier.
"Geeze, honey - Dusty's had three times as many C-Dory's as me!"

Too cool Duster!
Hey I remember the thing you like about the 22 and the Tomcat you had at the time we were down there visiting...
It was the floor: The floors being level; cockpit and cabin; no step-up or step-down... same thing I like best about the 22s. I may Upgrade to a gutted-out 27 some day! (level the floors---this old-fart likes the same!)
Have fun Dusty... maybe next time were there you'll take us for a spin! LOL |

Thanks Greg!
And when I come up there I need a ride around the block in your dream machine - sure would like to be fishing in that pristine water with you and Ma.
You are right about the level deck. The cat is a great boat - my absolute favorite for taking our choppy tiide/wind weather. The new model cat should be the best thing on the water from what I hear. Basically a 25 interior on the old cat hull - and it looks like a real C Dory. I have no idea when they will be in production, and the price will be up there. Gotta be to get all the goodies in... there will be a long line for that one, I'm positive.
But Dusty will be happy with the 22 - BTDT and it fits my life style. We will try the new 90 eTec on this one -- two stroke, but looks great. Only way to really know is to run one for a while. Much great engineering, weighs 80 pounds less than Honda, no scheduled dealer service for 3 years, and long list of good stuff. We'll see. Some Hondas out there with 8,000 hours or so -- no history on the eTec. Who knows.
It's good to touch base again, Greg. Miss our old BS sessions.
Hug to Ma -

Heeeel yeah! That would be great, but I'm still a little miffed that you did not take us out on the TomCat when we were there ..... uhuh! see how you are... (ROTFLOL)
Dusty, my "take" on the whole engine-theory is this: The heavier the main engine... the better! for simple reason of the ---drastically changing weight-shift--- from going to a totally-fueled-boat, to a boat running low on fuel. This has a way of transforming a C-Dorys handling in a trailing-sea (and a very mild 'trailing-sea' at that) The more engine weight that never changes (permanent part of your boat weight) the better for situations when you have a boat load (Say...lots of peeps' and gear) in the cabin (bow-heavy) on return to port! Last trip out with a couple photographers and there 'mega-gear-load'.... we were fine leaving port, but coming back and having shed a couple hundred pounds in fuel... I had to transfer some cargo, out of the "cargo-hold" (V-Berth---LOL) and into a water-tight bag, and out in the cockpit! (are you still with me) Anyway; I still ain't no "two-stroke-man" and recall from several trips; that "weight (back there) just makes for a more sea-worthy boat. (exclamation marks!)
Dusty, I miss our old 'BSn' to! Good to see your still 'kickin ass!
PS: Is that new C.A.T available for 'scopin-out' yet? Sounds awesome baby!! How bout contributing one for the cause of 'fox-trots' (LOL) (sorry... gettin obnoxious again) out...

Been missin' you, RF... and gotta agree with all you say on weight aft. If I was boating in your situation (Lordy, how I wish) I'd do just like you do... but keeping everything light really saves the gas bucks, and my biggest load is full fuel and a couple of six-packs ... Man, if I even see a fish in the boat I won't know what to do. Slow, slow, slow.
In a following sea of any size I don't like ANY flat-arsed light boat - including C-Dory - but she's as good as any of 'em and better than most. We've got 40 knots of wind against a strong ebb right now -- and that's good boat checking weather. Sure makes me want to put another log on the fire.
Worth your reading something about, RF, because the ETEC just ain't any old 2-stroke. Troll all day with no smoke, positive lube for the bearings, and smooth as a 4-banger... under-hood tank of oil lasts about 100 hours. Looks good, and I'm going to test for a while and see.... pretty hi-tech for this old guy, but it's built in the US, and worth a shot.

Dusty, the E-TEC looks interesting. What's the right shaft length, I'd guess the 25", did you get the blue or the white?

White, Charlie -
And 25 is right (I think)... the reports so far are good, and no bad comments floating around the net that I have found. NO service bulletins yet -- they learned lots of lessons on past failures and this could be a winner. Hey - I'm a 4-stroke guy, and have been for years, but this is an interesting concept and couldn't resist. From all reports it is as economical as a 4-stroke, smooth as a 4-stroke -- and weighs enough less to put a kicker on without a weight penalty. I don't think it is as quiet as the Honda, but we'll see. No dealer sked service for 3 years is a huge plus... and 2-strokes, with less reciprocating mass, sure like to turn up.
I've had some rotten luck over the years with 2-strokes so I'll be super picky. Even lost a 175 power head when I was doing some testing for Johnson... upper ring land blew and that ended that story. Metal, metal everywhere. But I also ran one for several years on a 21 Whaler with no problems.
Interesting point for you engineer types... when setting the ETEC up on the laptop you must specifiy whether synthetic or regular oil. Runs much leaner mixture with synthetic. At troll speed the mixture is about 300 to 1 (can't remember exact numbers)... so no oil residue in the water.
