I am thinking of installing an overhead hatch centered in the cabin roof of my 16 Cruiser to let in more light and enable me to stick my head through for piloting (I am 6'4", so I would be able to see easily). I was going to use an 19" Bowmar identical to the forward hatch. Does anyone have any experience with this type of installation, or cautions about such a project?

Thanks.

Have a look at the Armia line of boats. The hard top has some pretty neat hatches for standing up thru when driving. Dont know who supplies their hatches.

In June 2009 we put in a 21 inch Bomar hatch on the roof of the C-Dory same as seen on berth area. Also added portholes in berth.

Some of the problems you can find is that the roof is not of even thickness and has a curvature so will require starboard and glassing to seal the hatch.

Now that the job is done it is wonderful. Much better air circulation without center front window open. Also allows for air-conditioner when needed or 21 inch fan that circulates air well at night.

Have found there is solar heat with roof top hatch closed. Use reflective shade as needed. This winter this will be a plus.

Mobile East Marine did the work for me and did a fine job.

The Arima hatches are molded in at the factory FYI . Check out the Jim Black Hatches also . Thats what Ranger Tugs and many boat builders use for roof ventilation .

I love the idea and would love to see photos and hear about pros and cons when you are finished.

Placed 3 pics showing overhead hatch installation:

Made one trip so far with it and I love it! Really opens up the cabin with light and ventilation when the camperback is sealed and offers a great view when I stick my head out.
