We've trailered the boat up to Wisconsin and are about to cruise Lake Winnebago.A C Dory 22 came by and seems to have an extended hard top roof.Does anyone know if that has been offered as a factory option? We didn't see it up close but just curious. In a few days we head for Bayfield and the Apostles. Alan on Simplicity.

Don't think it was ever a factory option. There are several boats that have created a hard top over the cockpit, don't know of any that have made it "one piece" with the cabin roof though. Try to get a picture of it if you can.

Check out Roger's [flrockytop] cantilever aluminum top. Its very nicely built and could have a hardtop instead of canvas . You guys have fun in the cool weather .

i saw a boat on craigslist a while back that was a 22 angler with a 22 cruiser top, if im not mistaken, so it stuck out over the back a bit, it looked factory done, like maybe someone paid a bit extra to have the factory do it when building the boat, it was blue i think..

If you saw it on the road on Thursday and it was blue - that would be ours. I drove the boat from Madison to our slip in Sturgeon Bay on Thursday.

If it was ours, we have the canvas frame that Roger had made for his.

We love it - on our Trent-Severn trip it was always nice to be out of the direct sun or the rain. We had one on our tug and also loved it.

Have a great time in Wisconsin - enjoy Bayfield and the Apostles.

Maybe see you on the Lake. Weather today was fantastic. Waves calm to two feet. Perfect weather. Enjoy your stay!

And a final question:

About how much would it cost to have one of these built by a railmaker and covered by a canvas shop (just the roof structure, and not the full enclosure, although that would be nice to know too)?

The lack of struts would sure make fishing with the extended cover a lot easier that having struts running down from the cover to the gunnels!

Thanks!

Hello Robert,

On your recent Trent-Severn cruise, did you trailer BRAZO with the canvas on the frame? If so, did that seem to work out OK?

Thanks to Roger's help, we had ours made at Blue Coral Towers. They made it exactly like Roger's and shipped it to us. The canvas frame was $1300.00 and the actual canvas top (only) was $500.00. I think shipping to Wisconsin was around $150. I installed the canvas frame myself - really not that hard.

I was not able to find anyone close to us that would do the canvas frame. I did get some quotes from around the country and they ranged from $3800 to $5500 just for the frame - crazy numbers compared to $1300.

We made our own full enclosure using Sunbrella Plus and Strataglass - along with the top end thread, zippers, etc - you could do it for less. Our cost was $1100.00 to do it ourselves. The quote to have someone do it for us was $4200.

On the trip to the Trent-Severn (and back) we removed the canvas from the frame. Seeing that we were traveling so far, we just didn't want to take a chance. I don't think it would be a problem leaving it on, but hate to have something off just a bit and cause problems with the canvas. We just reinstalled at the ramp.

When I've trailered the boat from Madison to Sturgeon Bay (abour 3 hour drive) - I've left the canvas on and it has not had any problems.

Thanks for the information Robert. Was the canvas top sourced through Blue Coral and sent as a package (frame + canvas top)? If not, who made the canvas top for you?

When we went to Yellowstone/Lake Powell last year we took our top off from here (Pensacola) to Yellowstone because of the distance. We just left it on when going from Yellowstone to to Powell. It did just fine but I also don't drive but about 50 mph when towing the boat.

Roger

Hi David,

Yes, the frame and canvas top was sourced through Blue Coral. They had someone come in and make the canvas top. Blue Coral made the frame just a bit different than Roger's because they did not have the boat.
