The sign in front of the local West Marine says there will be a Flare Shoot on Saturday May 2 at Skyline, at 2 PM. This should give you a chance to see how well (or poorly) the flares in your emergency kit work under real-life conditions.

Warren, us Right Coasters don't know where Skyline is.... Is it anywhere near Deltaville Va? Do you suppose that West Marine would be disturbed if we shot off our expired flares in their parking lot?? Shocked

Charlie

Harvey, you mean I'm not supposed to stand in the cockpit and shoot it into the cabin? Shocked

Charlie, that's only recommended if you like to swim from the boat. In your area, check around first. No sharks, no gators, OK ....SHOOT

and swim Wink

Something that has always disturbed me (well, I stay disturbed) is the fact that on the 4th, in inshore waters, everybody would go oooooh if you shot a flare. DO NOT SINK ON THE 4TH OF JULY.

I've been wondering what to do with my many expired flares. I think I'll call the USCG and see if it'd be OK if I fired them on the 4th of July when we're anchored out watching the fireworks at our local display.... If half of them work OK, I'll save the other half as spares...

Ha ha - you know that's a great point.

Charlie - I have a feeling they will say no but let us know.

The local folks love their fireworks around here... don't sink on the 4th of July, every friday evening between Memorial Day and Labor Day, Cinco de Mayo, Christmas, New Years, Flag Day, any President or saint's birthday, anyone else's birthday, or any day that ends in "Y". Cool Mr. Green

Of course, unless you are in the Gulf, the water is pretty shallow... if the boat goes down or you fall overboard... stand up!. Wink

Best wishes,
Jim B.
