|

What are folks using for a transom pad for a kicker? I just want to protect the gelcoat, and plan to put the kicker on the transom next to the main.
I'm thinking of something like this:

I have used them in small boats and dinghies in the past. They work fine. _________________ Bob Austin

How did that pad work with your kicker? I have a Honda 9.9 that by the owner's manual states it will fit on a transom up to 57 mm (2.2 inches) thick and my transom is about 60 mm thick. The kicker bracket opens up to about 60.5 mm but I don't have any room for a pad. I'm with you regarding protecting the gel coat. _________________ Roger

The Transom Pad was a total bust -- it tore almost immediately and I ended up scratching the transom anyway. In the end, I attached a large square of teak (8" x 10" x 2") with two large bolts to put the 6 hp kicker on.
I think with a 9.9 you'll need to attach either a Garelick type motor bracket or a larger piece of teak with four bolts -- or just get used to the idea that the Gel Coat will get scratched.
If there is room, you can attach a piece of starboard to protect the transom. Seems most folks use the Garelick type bracket.
Good luck! Let us know what you decided.

I had the same experience with that exact transom pad. The pad tore right away and I had thrown $30 away. There is not enough room on my transom for that pad to fit anyway. If I were doing it again I would look at buying a cheap mud flap from an auto supply store instead and saving the "marine" premium for a cheap piece of rubber. |
