Have any c brats done any lake superior cruising?.We're trailering the boat to Door county to cruise the wisconsin side of lake Michigan. Then maybe to UP around Marquette & try Superior. It's an intimidating body of water but spectacular in it's beauty.Any suggestions on well protected anchorages, where to launch etc?

We cruised it in Journey in 2007. The journal of the trip is at Journey On's Travels go for the 2007 story, which also covers our trip to and from. A lot of personal stuff, but a good amount of boating.

Though we did it in another boat, we went from the Eire Canal, through Lake Eire, Huron and Michigan, from where we shipped the boat back to LA. Traveling around Michigan, using the Harbours of Refuge was wonderful

Whilst the south shore of Lake Superior is sparse, there are some wonderful places in which to boat right next to Door County on Lake Michigan: Mackinaw City, Traverse Bay, etc. Since you're trailering the boat, don't forget to stop off in some of the other Great Lakes, or even the Eire Canal, one of the nicest trips in the US.

We don't have any experience with Lake Superior, but we keep our boat in Door County Wisconsin. If you have any questions, need any help, etc. - let us know. We have a Cottage in Door County and we keep our boat in a slip in Sturgeon Bay. The Door County region is a great place to cruise.

Let us know if we can be on any assistance when you are in Door County.

Enjoy your evening.

You'll love Lake Superior. There are way too many places to see to even begin to try to cover them in an e-mail. Buy Bonnie Dahl's book on Lake Superior Cruising; it's the best single source I know of. We are fortunate to live in Bayfield, the jumping off place for the Apostle Islands, and have spent a lot of time out there. There's a quiet little protected harbor at Stockton Island, which just happens to be one of my favorites for overnighting, hiking, etc. Devil's Island sea caves are spectacular. Enjoy your trip; it is truly a beautiful place!

I have navigable access to the lake and spend most of the summer at Isle Royale ( the admiral works there) plus we have been cicumnavigating the lake in ten day stages the last 4 summers. We've completed the north shore from Grand Portage, MN to Grand Maris, MI; this summer we plan on Grand Maris, MI to Houghton, MI and around the Keweenaw peninsula. Way too much to discuss but as mentioned earlier Bonnie Dahl's guide is a must. Canadian shore is fantastic but has its challenges. US shore has a lot less sheltered anchorages but has its good spots. PM me with more specific questions.

Thanks for the info everyone. We're getting excited about the cruise & it sounds like Bonnie Dahl's book is the way to start planning the trip.Linda will be adding to our Great Loop blog as the trip progresses. http://voyageofsimplicity.blogspot.com

Simplicity,

I also recommend the Apostles. It really is C-dory heaven at least in the summer. If you like to fish, you won't be disappointed. My bride and I did a 3 day and nite adventure over ther last Labor Day and caught Lake trout, salmon and splake (lake trout/brook trout hybrid). Very tasty too!

You could probably spend six months on Lake Superior and not see it all. There is over 2700 miles of shoreline and I don't think that includes the island shoreline!

The Apostles are the only extensive archepelego on the lake. The further you go from Bayfield and Madeline Island the fewer boats you will see.

Have fun.

Capt Dan
