Garmin 4210 & KVH 1000

A Garmin 4210 with radar was added to Levity last May. A KVH 1000 heading sensor has now been added to provide target aquisition in radar cruising mode. The single ended NMEA 0183 compliant device wiring instructions found in Garmin's installation documemt # 190-00779-02 Rev.D January 2008 were difficult for an electronically illiterate C-Brat(myself) to translate. The installation instructions from KVH added to the confusion. A call to both KVH 401-847-3327 and Garmin tech support provided clarity. Perhaps this information will assist some other C-Brat connecting a KVH 1000 to their Garmin 4000 series chart plotter.

To ground:
NMEA Black
KVH Black
KVH Brown
KVH Blue (after the unit is calibrated)

To power:
KVH Red(with dedicated fuse)

KVH orange to MNEA orange with white stripe
KVH green to NMEA white
