I think I have been doing so much rolling around the office floor and laughing the last couple of weeks that the Admiral is wondering what I have been drinking.

I just hope we can keep it up all Winter. (the wit, that is). It's those long days when it is supposed to be Spring and it's blowing 40 Kts that I hate.

Hopefully with two boats in the current fleet we will be able to get out and have our water fixes this season.

Keep it up guys and gals and may all your Turkeys be of the feathered variety.

Merv & Kathy

I don't know if this guy directly heads the copulation department over there to Ranger Tugs, but he seems to know something about the R29.

Oh, and it isn't stated, but even though the price seems pretty steep it isn't so bad when you consider the R29 is capable of reproducing. Maybe even get you twin dinghys.

Since most boats are 'shes' I wanna buy a 'he' and collect stud fees.

BTW, is it the factory or the dealer that provides the equipment to turn them over in order to check the 'gear'?

.....and just how many dinghys does a guy need......perhaps the Snap On tool company has a vested interest in this.

Ahem..... I am trying to elevate this line of thought with a little poetry.... This poem that was left on our boat when we got it.

It Reigned A Pawn The See (a homonymaly)

Sew hard it reigned a pawn the see,
The knight heir full of missed,
The gail had past, butt wins still blue
Hour tiny bat turd craft.
With sales come pleat lee torn a weigh,
Her broken massed into,
She looked two bee a dare a licked
From witch sum penance flue.

Weed maid a coarse four owe pen see,
Butt sew in tents it blue,
Their was know wrest oar respite they're,
Wee had two sea it threw.
Water pored rite ore the bough,
Her mane seem sprung a leek,
Wee baled for ours with awl our mite,
And preyed as wee grew week.

Four for long daze wee road it out,
Until the storm a baited,
The whether dyed and rescue came,
Fore knot inn vane weed weighted.
Attune a bote had tide align
Four ward honor stem,
They gave us awl dry close two where,
And then they toad us inn.

Wee cited land inn won daze thyme,
And how hour spear it sword!
The bless said shore was under feat,
And hour bote see cure lee moored.
Their is amoral too this tail,
At leased four us ewe sea.
Hints fourth wheel knot set sale again
Wile it reigns a pawn the see.

I would like it to be noted that in spite of the theme of this thread, I have resisted the impulse to say any of the things that came to mind upon hearing that all three models of the Ranger will be in Miami!!

There are literally hundreds of small trawlers, up to 36 feet which were built with 40 or less HP diesel engines. For example the standard engine in the Willard's was the Perkins 4-107 or 108. This engine is closer to 35 useful HP--and it pushes the boats up to about 7.5 knots. Thousands of sailboats use the 2 and 3 cyl Yanmars, as well as the Perkins.

I was a guest aboard a 55 foot trawler--10 foot beam--which made the transatalantic crossing with a Perkins 4 107, Idlewild, a 57 trawler, which circumnavigated, via the Northwest passage, had a single 55 hp diesel. Check out "Voyaging under power" by Beebe and Leishman--as well as "The Nature of Boats" by Gerr, for discussions of low power boats.

Both of my motor sailors had 80 hp tractor engines--one was 46 feet and weight of 36,000 lbs, the other was 62 feet and over 60,000 lbs--both got about 6 miles a gallon and cruised at slightly over 6 knots--max about 9 knots. It doesn't take much hp to move a boat. The boat I built had 18 hp diesel, with a controlable pitch prop and would do 7 knots easily days on end.

Hey Bob,

Well it might be OK for some guys - for myself, I need the opportunity to move the boat faster than that should the situation occur. If I'm making a crossing and bad weather is coming in, 5-8 knots is not going to work.

Unlike a larger boat with a smaller engine where you can weather the storm - Keep in mind this has a small beam. Unlike a big beam trawler - weather plays an important part.

Besides, you can get the same economy with a larger engine throttled back. If these guys are going to be competitive with other companies, put a damn decent engine in the boat and quit cutting corners to keep the base price down to make it look like a great deal!
