I went through almost two boxes of shells.
You use a shotgun 
When I was a kid we used a .22 on everything...We couldn't afford shotgun shells, well maybe a couple of boxes of .410 a year. 
Most of the time though, it was a Red Ryder B.B. gun...Course you had to be within 20 ft. or so for that.

As I took aim for another shot, I noticed a trickle of blood from the eye--- shot it right through the eyes and since it was on roost, the feet was locked on the fence dead. 
But who could resist an easy shot right in front of the house. 
When my Uncle came home there was a dead Woodpecker hanging there 30 ft. in the air like a flag. 
Lost my gun for a month
