I was talking with a Honda dealer about this, and he says:
trailer down as far as is safe. If the main support bar of your trailer is 8" above
the ground, give yourself a foot at the skeg.
He said the flip down brackets are there in case the hydraulics need to be
worked on. Flipping down the supports allows the trim-tilt to be safely removed.
If I were going to trailer a long distance, and if the lower unit would be too close
to the ground in full down tilt, I would probably put a piece of wood in between
the lower unit and the transom in case the hydraulics leaked or the motor otherwise
could get lower than originally set for. (Someone walking by and hitting the
down switch, etc.)
I trailered the boat with the motor in this position for the first time yesterday, and the motor
certainly looked more secure on the transom. Also consider that this is
how the boat is designed - to have the motor in the down position and generating
enough thrust to pick up the boat and hurl it along at 30mph.

I trailer down. I move the adjustment bar to the highest hole when trailering and lower the motor back down onto it to relieve strain on hydraulics. I have to redo this at the launch site because when running I have the adjustment bar in the lowest hole. Many others, including El and Bill use a thick wooden dowel. Does the same thing. Raises skeg some inches but still trailer down.

The Honda mechanic pointed out that these hydraulics will accept the force of
the motor pushing the boat along at 30 mph. I suspect they are strong enough.
But, you could loose pressure and have the motor drop down.

I think that is the purpose of the lock, to keep the motor up during transit so it cant fall.

Dunno. Guy claimed he was Honda certified and that's what he was
taught. The brackets (I'm only talking Honda...no other motor) are
only for holding up the motor during maint. on the motor trim/tilt.
Honda manual says "down" if possible or use one of those support bars.

Your right Mike--just read it myself. Yes I am a Doubting Thomas. Can't remember where I got the info to transport in the tilted position. Should have read my manual more thoroughly. I got stuck on the prop clearance thing. Honda does have a lot of built in forgivness. We've trailered in the tilted position against the stops for almost 30000 miles mostly on poor road serfaces. Many miles on dirt roads, 2 trips to Alaska and so far all is well. This years Alaska trip will be the El and Bill way. Can't be much of anything there way that isn't tried and true on a 22 with twin Hondas.
