Thanks for the tip Dave. I just downloaded PaintDotNet and I found a lot of new cool toys to play with and I am sure it will bring me joy, joy and more joy as I dig deeper into it's functionality. _________________ Mike Taylor

OK, Dave and Mike...I too just downloaded paint.net...and I really am stupid, but just the way I never got Photoshop, I just don't get this one. And unlike Photoshop, this one has no useful help - and the help is not searchable. There is a tutorial website on how to do really cool advanced stuff - but nothing on just how to do simple things. But I am not ready to give up - walk me through learning this one. Here is what I want to do first , essentially dodge the shadow areas, especially our faces (I am an old darkroom guy, so please bear with). Here is the image I want to fix up, it was taken at Gig Harbor last weekend. So how do I do this with paint.net?

Ok Pat, You Win....After spending an hour on your mug...I give up. I can not make you look much better...and Patty doesn't need any improvments. I suggest you mention to the photographer to turn on his flash for some fill lite the next time you are in bright sun light and you want to hide in the shade while you are being photographed.
Down here in SW Florida..."The Sunshine State" we don't bother to turn our flashs off just because of this result. I am sure that someone here with a lot more graphic artist skills will be able to provide you with a much improved image soon. But me....I'm going fishing.

OK I will walk you through the process of working with this photo.
A couple of things you should know.
It is always best to work with the original photo, not one that has been modified as these are on the C-Brats site. Every time a JPEG file is saved, you get some degrading of it.
1. Open Your photo in Paint.net
You should have a small “History” window visible somewhere in Paint.net. If you don’t, Click on the “Window” menu at the top of Paint.net, then on the drop down menu, click on “History”.
2. Click on the “Layers” menu (top of Paint.net), then on the drop down menu move your mouse to “Adjustments” then on the pop out menu click on “Levels”.
3. Move the “Levels Adjustments” window so you can see your photo.
4. On the “Levels Adjustments” window, click on the “Auto” button.
5. The middle value of the output column it will be .66. Change it to .50 to lighten it a little more. Then click “OK”
6. Now again click on “Layers” menu (top of Paint.net) then “Adjustments” and this time click on “Brightness / Contrast”. Move the window so you can see your photo.
7. Change the “Contrast” value to 20 and the “Brightness” value to -15, then click “OK”
8. Click on “Layers” menu then “Adjustments” then “Hue / Saturation”. Move the window.
9. Change the “Saturation” value to 120 and the “Hue” value to 10. Now click “OK”
10. To view the changes with the original photo click on “Open Image” on the small History window and you will see what you started with. You can click on the different selections on the History window to see how each one changed your photo.
11. Click on “File” (top of Paint.net), then on the drop down menu, click on “Save As”.
12. On the “Save as type”, make sure it is “JPEG”. Select the folder you want to save it in then give your file a name. (Do not over right the original)
13. Click on the “Save” button.
14. A Save Configuration window will pop up. (The default value of 95 and is the best value to use, so click “OK”.
If you decide to make more adjustments to your photo, use your original, not this copy. You will get better results. If I had a copy of the original, the final results would be better than this copy.
I know these instructions are more detailed than you need, but it may help others that may want to try Paint.net. If you or anyone else need more help with Paint.net feel free to ask and I will do my best to help. I don’t use Paint.net but may start after I saw what I can do with it. This will give you a jump start with Paint.net. Now play with it for awhile and we will probably be able to help each other. _________________ Dave

Wow,Dave! Those are some fantastic set of precise instructions.
You're a genius with this computer stuff!
You actually did make Pat look better, which is a service to all of us who must deal with him constantly.
But wouldn't it just be a few less steps to send him through plastic surgery and horomone therapy?
Then he wouldn't pose such a contrast to that good lookin' Patty!
