Hey, Jon, any chance you and Terrie might want to come north and join some Brats on a Puget Sound/San Juan cruise?
Up here, the 16' is an endangered species, with just three among us. All my little buddies have grown up. |

Catman,
Sounds intriguing. Probably going to be a while for us as I just started this new job not to long ago, so leave time is non existent until after August . We do want to get up there though and learn the bigger water skills from fellow CDers. Until then I am working on outfitting the Denebola to be able to do trips like your talking about. Thanks for thinking of us. Keep prodding .
If you ever feel like getting down Nehalem Bay OR. way for maybe a three day weekender, let me know. We have a little place there , and free moorage at a private marina/RV park, (free for you too ). The crabbing is good most of the time with the peak of the salmon run August through September. It's only a 20 minute drive to trailer down to Tillamook Bay from there too.
That goes for any other Brats as well. Jon _________________ Jon & Terrie C-Doryless |

Hey there Jon
Just wanting to know how the crab davit mounts are coming along.
I like your Idea of using the plastic wood for the bottom mounting block.
Hope to see some pics soon....lol..... _________________ Roger on the "SENSEI"

Roger on the Sensei,
I hope to mount that next weekend. My plan is to take detailed pics. with step-by-step instructions. If Tyboo or Da Nag is watching this thread, maybe they can tell me how to set this up in a different tutorial for others to see instructions & pics. without having to bounce around the site .
I found a composite material made by TREX which is used for decking & other outdoor applications which seems to be the best product. It's made of recycled wood fibers and plastic which is melted together and formed into various sizes and colors. Supposed to never rot, is not water soluble, resists mold other funguses and won't split or chip. You can learn more about this at: www.trex.com It is pretty expensive but less than teak. It looks like a good alternative which may be used for numerous applications where you won't want to, or can't replace the wood you used which is now rotted out . You can order it through your local lumber yard, although my dealer gave me one of his samples in the 1.5 inch thickness .
More to come. Jon |

I have used Trex on my dock--it is not really a substitute for wood. In dock use it has to be supported at 12 to 16"--will not work at 24 inches as 2x6 will. Starboard is a better choice for blocks under davits. I cannot think of a place where Trex would be substituted for teak on a boat--except maybe in a grating--but one which didn't take any bending or flexing...Great dock material however. It weathers to a gray color. _________________ Bob Austin

Bob,
Have not heard of star board, do go on. Where can you get it? Why do you feel it's better for this application? Do you have pics? Is there a web-site? Tell me, tell me tell me!
I'm planning to put this in this weekend and want the best. Jon |

The web site is: http://www.kingstarboard.com/
The material is dense plastic and can be worked with normal wood working tools.
Starboard is stocked at West Marine stores--but it is not cheap.
There is an industerial material which is similar, but I don't remember the name--I will try and find it.
The problem I see with the Trex is that it is a compressed material of cedar and recycled plastic. Under compressive loads it may disintregrate.
You have to be careful putting the screws into it on deck planking--it will sort of fragment right around the screw--that is why I think with compressive loads--and working--as a davit, that it may not be the best.
The Starboard is used for fairing blocks and risers for davits on a regular basis.

CPG Seaboard is pretty much the same stuff - sold locally around here by Tap Plastics. _________________

Bob,
Thanks for the quick response . This certainly looks like the stuff to use. I'll see if my local West Marine has the size I need in stock. I'll have to figure out how to best bevel this block so it will sit level on the deck near the gunnel, but shouldn't be to difficult.
Another C-Brat to the rescue .
Thanks again, Jon. |

You can use a power planer, a bandsaw, router, belt sander or any hand tools, such as a rasp or hand plane to work the Starboard. one way for a taper is to cut the final level with a saw or router, then work the taper in. It can also be sanded. There is a glue--but I have never tried to use it.
One good use is to put a small piece on the transom and then screw/bolt the transducer for the depth sounder to this --avoiding putting more holes in the transom--and risking damage to the core.
One caution, it is not as stiff or strong as teak in span--ie if you make a swim step the spacing of supports need to be closer together. |

Jon -
That plastic stuff whittles real nice with a cheapy one-hand block plane. Set the depth light so the blade doesn't dig in.
That Starboard is pretty tough stuff. The plastic lumber you hear me raving about is great for non-loadbearing applications, but it won't work where it has work to do. The starboard is great for that.
Look at it close when you buy it. I think Starboard is all the same hard material, but some of the plastic sheeting available has a softer cellular core and is easy to bend and break. Starboard is solid all the way through. _________________ TyBoo Mike

Ty Boo Mike,
Thanks for the input . I'll make sure I have my glasses on when I go down there.
Did you see the question a few comments back up this thread about setting up an album/instructional page for mounting the davit? Please let me know what you think.
Hey, got my Denebola lettering today from Speedy Signs. I'll post pics. Sunday eve.

If you're like me, you better look through the bottom part of your glasses!
Yeah, I saw your suggestion, and it's a good one. The best bet would be to do the text posting in the Cockpit and Accessories section of our library, and post the pics in the related album. You can also put the pics right in the body of the message if it will help to explain things. If you do it that way, be sure and break it up into replies to the original message to keep it easy to follow. If you want to put all the pics in the album, and reference them in the text, you can just link directly to them. If you need help doing that, Bill or I can edit your message and insert the links for you.
Pictures? You got pictures? We love 'em!
And I like the way you put the space in Ty Boo! It made me think of my late friend, Tyler Boothe, for whom the boat is named. |

TyBoo Mike,
Didn't mean to put the space in there but sounds like it was a good memory trigger. Tyler must have been a great friend .
I'll revisit this thread when I get the text and pics. together for the davit. What you explained sounded pretty straight forward , WHICH IS SCARING THE BAJEEBERS OUT OF ME . I'm not a nerd , I'm not a nerd , Nerd a not I'm . Ahhh that's better.

....lol....
All those in that last post makes me think that Jon is gonna fit right in as a certified Bratster
I cannot wait to get together and drain a few bottles with you there Jon. we are not particular in the brand but you do need to try to find your self some Snoqualimie Falls Brew. I can safely say that you will not be disappointed. I am partial to their Avalanche Ale...mmmm mmmm good.
Two of our Brat-Pack are the owners of the brewery and we have no problem with supporting them....lol... |
