Hi Ken
Another option you might consider would be driving to Bellingham and launching at the Squalicum Harbor boat launch, $9.00 to launch includes three days parking for your truck and trailer. The parking can be extended as well. Cruising to Friday Harbor from Bellingham Bay is a leisurely 4 hr cruise through the San Juans. My wife and I will probably be heading to the Rendezvous as well.

Good for your smaller boat. But does go almost dry on a -2 tide. My boat needs a 2 ft tide or better for that one. We have also been using Bellingham again if we are heading for the northern park of san juans. its the same time from my house in Tulalip to all three ramps. As for hotels we liked the Earth box inn and spa. Old motor inn that has been redone. its right in town and not a long walk to the harbor. https://www.earthboxinn.com/ The Friday harbor house is always a good choice but pricey. We had our wedding there way back in the dark deep history around 2003. |
We are thinking that for us, coming from Sequim, the Port Townsend to Coupeville ferry is much preferable to anything on I-5.
Whether we launch at Deception Pass or Anacortes is still undecided.
If we were starting out on the other side, Bellingham or Blain both sound great.
Is there a launch at Anacortes that has a ramp, and has parking? The idea of using a sling seems like overkill for a 16' Angler.
We will also look into Deception Pass to launch. Being such a small boat, launching is pretty easy for us.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions, keep them coming! _________________ -Ken

Thank you for that suggestion, Mac & Jess!
I think that we are going to try and avoid going around the loop on I-5, just because it is so hit and miss with traffic for us coming from Sequim.
Unless we took the ferry to Edmonds, which would bypass the worst of it...
Too many options! |

I suggest taking the Port Townsend ferry to Whidbey. You'll pay less and won't have to drive on any of I-5. You're then only 20 miles to Deception Pass and launching out of Cornet Bay. Boating through Deception Pass is always fun and interesting. Multi lane ramp and lots of parking especially if you don't go on a weekend.
Or drive to Anacortes and launch at Washington Park, just past the ferry to San Juans. From there, easy to shoot across Rosario Strait through Thatcher Pass and you are in the islands. _________________ Patrick and Kim Walker

I'm not familiar enough with CapSante to know if there is a ramp nearby. At least I've never heard of one with the trips I have done out of there. Cap Sante does have a smaller manual operated sling launch that is cheaper. I don't know if the 16 is under the weight restrictions for that one. You can go to their website to see. Parking has always been safe and secure for me, and I've left my truck and trailer for several weeks. It does cost $5 or $6 a day for parking. But with Gary's mention of Blaine, if I don't leave my rig down somewhere near the South Sound, and end up loading up to tow the boat farther north, as long as I'm already going to be driving I5, I will likely check out Blaine. Probably depends on how long I plan to stay on the water and what the harbor tells me if I want to leave the rig longer than 2 weeks. Colby |

Joefairbanks,
My wife and I and Harvey, your fellow Sequimatians or Sequimites or…make the journey from JWM across the straight. It’s doable in any C Dory with cooperating weather. The only caveat is you have to park your truck and trailer offsite. I usually launch the day before and just pay a moorage fee so that I’m ready to go in the morning. If you’re interested in crossing with us, you can PM me. Your plans could always be subject to change and I would recommend that you make a reservation on the ferry that can be canceled if needed. Either way, see you there.
Howard

only problem with Blaine when we used it is the wind. Not at Blaine but in the Strait of Georgia. If that wind is blowing at all there is no where to hide from it. 30 miles of open water for that swell to build. We had to play the waiting game in the Gabriola island area because the wind and wave was to big for the my 27fter. and running near shore is not a plan as that's all shallow headed in to Blaine. On top of that the ramp was a little sketchy with rolling homeless parked in the ramp lot back then. 6 years ago so may not be a problem now. _________________ Thomas J Elliott

Salmon Fisher, you mentioned launching at Coronet Bay, I was wondering if you had to have a special state parks pass to use this facility. I've stayed there several times by boat using my state parks boating pass but I'm uncertain in you have to have a Discover Pass to use the facility if arriving by truck/trailer. _________________ Dave

Dave, great question.
Yes, one needs a Discover Pass, $10 daily or $35 annual, to access any State Park including to launch your boat at Cornet Bay. Overnight parking is $10 a night with a maximum of 14 nights.
To cover all bases, access to State Parks and boat launching, we purchase a Natural Investment Permit. This works just like a Discover Pass and also included boat launching and trailer dump. It is $80 for 12 months.

Patrick, would this include rig parking then, or is that still separate? And still limited to 14 days? |
