Another take on the, dog/dingy issue and on the Great Loop, is By Pat and Patty Anderson aboard DayDream on the C brat forum. Also read their separate blog on the Great Loop is a great read. Not only do they cover the boat, & fittings, but also all types of issues to be approached on this long trip, vs their shorter trips in other parts of the US. _________________ Bob Austin

Interesting the possibilities Foggy has brought up with paddleboards as tenders. I've watched these become really popular here in South Sound Oro Bay. In the summer, at least, you'll see nearly as many people "out there" with paddle boards as kayaks and canoes. I initially thought they were a bit crazy, as you can't last very long in the water here due to hypothermia. Now I'm seeing people older than me get out there nearly every day, standing, kneeling, and sometimes laying down and paddling with their hands on them. I don't see very many after Labor Day, but there are a few that are now putting on dry suits. I tried it, and found my back problems are much better standing. They can actually track well, and you can get some major distance. They don't handle rough water well. I had the opportunity to paddle one about a mile each way with a gas can on it when a buddy ran out of gas on Lake Washington. It saved our bacon. I don't think anything will stow quite as well, and they are really light to pick up and deploy, though maybe not as light as my Wee Lassie canoes (16 and 25 lb). I'd love to hear any other experiences people have with them as tenders on their C-Dorys. _________________ Rob Harrison & Marcia Ciol

When I was a Kid we would paddle the Sesquehanna and Delaware in Grumman Aluminum Canoes. Some times we would take our belts (kids wore belts back then) and would tie the warts together making essentially a Pontoon boat. The canoes then became really fun and we could walk around at will from canoe to canoe.
Now imagine if two paddle boards could be connected in some way... |

There are several types and models of "catamaran paddle boards". |

On our 25 CD (no radar arch, no davit, solar on cabin top) we use a Zodiac Cadet Aero 230 as our cruising dinghy. It 7'7" in length and weighs 53. We just pull it up and stow it across the aft end of cockpit with the dinghy bow down in the cockpit and the stern resting on the stainless railing. Its easy for 2 people, 70+y.o., to pull up and one person to launch. We use it with a EP paddle electric OB that we remove when we are underway. The cabin door still opens and closes. _________________ Raven 1983 22’ Classic, 2009-2020

This seems like the right size but where do I sit? I'm 265 will the rail hold me on an inflatable. The wife and Dog will sit on the thwart and forward compartment.
I bet this style (Rollup) tows better than most dinghy's of any style.

Good question.
First, it tows pretty well at low speeds, but we pull it on deck if we have any significant distance to travel.
As to where to sit: my wife sits on midships seat and I sit aft of that to operate to OB. But you might be able to sit in middle bench seat to keep your weight centered and wife on thwart. Dog to balance. Our mileage may vary as we're lighter, but Zodiac capacity is 662# so it probably doable although the issue might be the dance of getting in and out of boat in balance. |
