I would say that Whittier is one of the least liked ports in the entire state. It's strange to say that because it is beautiful, it is gorgeous, and everywhere around it is stunning, but the downside is there is nothing in Whittier proper but a tunnel, a parking lot, boat launch, hotel, and the 1 building where the entire "town" resides. It has the potential to be one of the biggest money making tourist traps in the state, but somehow doesn't utilize that potential at all. You're not wrong for basing your journey out of Valdez. The weather is far better there and it is an actual town with friendly people. I hope you enjoy your stay and that you have a great trip Smile

For all the reasons stated we are planning to put in at Valdez and avoid Whittier except for fuel when on that side of the Sound. Valdez truck and trailer parking is only $4.25/day dockside and cheaper yet with a five minute walk. Good advice. Thank you.

"Fuel prices in Canada are very high as well. Around $7.00 dollars a gallon in some places. Canadians are lined up at Native Reservations to buy gas at a lower price."

FYI, you need a so-called STATUS CARD in order to buy fuel at a discount from native owned gas stations/marinas. An Indian status card (formally known as a Certificate of Indian Status) is an identity document that confirms you are registered as a Status Indian under the Indian Act . You need to apply for the card through the Canadian government.

Gas is up to $ 8.53/gallon in Sault Ste Marie : Ontario : Canada . In the Sault some Native Reserves are selling their gas to non-natives at about 20 cents cheaper than non-native gas stations. Someone posted from BC that you need a status card to get native prices , these are not native prices . Status card holders get their gas even cheaper.

FYI Sault Ste Marie is surrounded by 3 Native Reserves
I think at 71 years old I know what a Status Card Is.

When we started boat shopping I really just wanted some sort of pilot house and was mostly looking at at Parker or Steigercraft glad we stumbled across the C-Dory line, could not be happier and really appreciate it when pulling up to the fuel dock.

Last weekend I rode the mc over to the Mystery Bay State Park and sat in the sun, for a while. There is a privative boat launch there --> track through the hedge onto the beach. A fellow drove in and launched his Montgomery 12 sail boat there. The same as my first sailboat. He had a ton of fun, for free, except the gas for the little old Datsun pickup he used to pull that little trailer.

Fun was pretty cheap for him, and he wasn't concerned about the current gas prices.

Would have been a pain to do 100 days on that in the Broughtons.

Are you planning on renting a slip for part of your stay? I'm a local weekend warrior so I have limited knowledge on this, but I do know that it gets very busy during commercial fishing season and transient slips are very hard to get, at least for Whittier. You might want to call the harbor master to inquire sooner then later.

Good points to consider. Cordova harbor is overrun by bowpickers during closures in June and July, and the Valdez harbor is slammed with seiners in between hatchery openers (mostly often late June and early July). Expect to raft up to some bigger boats, which is all part of the fun.

This might be the summer of 16-18 knots for us. Our Suzuki 115 burns very little at that speed. Luckily, the PWS is small enough that we can still get to some awesome spots in 2-4 hours.

Good info. Our intent is to be out on the sound most of the time except for fuel and groceries.

Lots of places to weather any storm (wind) in PWS
You will have a blast.
Might see you out there!!
Bring a couple extra 15gal cub cans (as in fit behind seat in your Super Cub) & fill then up whenever possible & you will have no problems.

Have fun! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Groceries for me are mostly, Drinking water, salt, pepper, garlic powder, butter. Was once stuck in Culross Bay for 4 days, W/30K sustained and G to 70k coming from E. Rockfish salmon & shrimp is pretty good survival food!

Here is a good laugh, $2.09 Lt in Comox today for marine fuel. That's $7.90 a gallon. Over $400 to fill the Dory so I think the" slow cruise" is going to be the norm for DrewBird this year. The price meter spins so fast that you can't watch it. Lol.

Jim.
