In this thread in 2007 - Thataway Bob posted "My experience with the CD 22 (I have not owned a 25, yet)--is that 30 is about the desirable top speed--they get a little skitterish above that speed and with 90 hp our 22 would get into the low 30's even loaded for cruising. "
You might want to get his opinion about 140hp on a 22.
Also, here's a thread in 2004 that also discusses putting a lot of HP on a 22CD. RedFox does have a 140HP engine on his but his boat is heavily loaded and has the older style "classic" hull. He's also just a little different than most folks so his recommendations may or may not apply to all. _________________ Roger on Meant to be |

I konw red had a bigger outboard on his boat and it held up just fine under tough usage. It is not the holding up I would worry about, but more in how the boat handles. |

I doubt that the weight of the 140 (depending on brand= how much weight) on the transom would be an issue--or the strength of the transom.
My concern would be handling of the boat--as noted the C Dory is not a speed boat--and our 22 did get a bit squirlley over 30 mph. I would not opt for a 140. The 25 is OK with 130--and that is a much heavier and a bit beamier boat. _________________ Bob Austin

That's putting it mildly. With the 115 I was able to get mine to 32 one time. Dang near lost it. Never again will I ever get it over 30. 28 is about the most I feel is safe. Even then it has to glass slick. _________________ 2007 22 Cruiser

My boat is a 2007 CD22. At that time the boat was rated for 100hp. I asked the factory about putting a Suzuki DF115 on mine and they said they could and would leave off the placard. They said that boats over 20 feet are not required to have the placard. I checked with my insurance company and they didn't have a problem. I put the 115 on mine for altitude. I thought I might see lower rpms and more fuel economy in the midrange. That did not happen. The only place I see a difference is on the top end at high altitude. 28 mph is the fastest the boat has gone. I probably could beat that if I would throw away some of the gear I drag around with me. I have never ran at sea level at WOT. _________________ Jody Kidd

I am with you. I rarely go over 28 in my too as I don't think it is solid at all in the 30s. In fact, mine will start to do the chine walk if you push it much harder and all of us know that have had fast boats at one time or another, you don't power your way through that. It just oscillates more and gets more unstable as the physics involved multiply exponentially.
Now I am not saying it is not possible. With perfect trim and motor positions and flat seas I could see that you might be able to get away with the upper 30s and maybe 40 as cbull thinks- doubt it would be easy though and would probably take a jack plate and some strakes to really pull it off. But gosh, who wants to do all that? Not me.... I will just go my typical high teens and low twenties and be happy I can go that fast as so often I am wallowing in 3-6 foot crap going 8-10 just to go fishing......
Now as far as having a 140 back there? Like I said before, I really think the structure will take it, but what is the point in spending the extra money on a larger outboard when you can't even pilot the boat at those speeds? It has me scratching my head. But, I am totally ok with it if someone is going to sensibly do it. Just because the power is there doesn't mean you have to use it, right? After all, a number of us buy way overpowered cars and pickups and don't scream down the highway at 120. Maybe we should look at it that way.....

I have a 93 Angler that was just repowered with a Suzuki 115.
1. It launches out of the hole...
2. Top speed has been recorded at 36.4 mph
3. The Angler weighs less then the Cruiser.
4. Performance at WOT....on smooth water...thrilling.
5. Performance at WOT....on short chop....ball buster.
Therefore to sum up my personal openion....115 is more then enough for either boat and should not be used at WOT except on smooth water with no other boats around.
Do I like my choice...Hell Yes...because by the time I load it down for long range cruising I will have the power to get up and go...at about 20 mph without feeling the engine be strained to get the job done.
Will a 90 or 100 do the job better...no...but it will do the job just as well. _________________ Mike Taylor

When I purchased my 1983 CD Classic at the factory I did so without buying an engine as I had an almost new 115 Johnson at home. The factory recommended and installed 70 hp. Johnsons. Mark Toland told me at the time that the boat was strong enough but he did not know how it would perform at WOT.
After I got home I installed the 115 and headed to Big Lake for trials. It easily hit 35 mph BUT..........at approx. 32 mph it would roll over about 45 degrees on it's port side from the prop torque. Pulling back on the throttle would put it straight again. It definitely tweaked the old sphincter when it rolled over. I did it 5 or 6 more times and then never did it again in normal usage.
A 115 hp. is max. on that boat and probably the newer ones also. I upgraded to a 90 hp honda and it actually pushed the boat faster, got there quicker at 1/3 the fuel consumption. _________________ On the HIGH TIDE-II, wife Carolyn and I.....Another summer fishing on the HIGH TIDE II in the Cook Inlet at Cape Ninilchik, Alaska.
