Raymarine S1000 Wireless Autopilot Installation

I've read the threads of C-Brats who have the Raymarine S1000 Wireless Autopilot on their boat. My question, has anyone personally installed a Raymarine S1000 Wireless Autopilot on a CC22 Cruiser? If so, I need details because MINE ARRIVED TODAY and I want to install it this weekend!! Smile

I've seen the video online, it doesn't seem that difficult and I have a good mechanical apptitude. My questions, how difficult is it? Where did you locate the course computer and the pump? How difficult was it to bleed the hydraulic system?

Please share your experiences as you can see, I'm chomping at the bit to install it.

Peter, I have one but did not install it. I would be happy to come down sunday and give you a hand. Sturgean fishing and bbq saturday if I can get it together. sunday i have nothing going at this point. If ou would like to come up and look at mine before you do yours just let me know.

Good deal, when you guys get this figured out, I'll buy one too and we can have a BBQ at my house to install it, I will spring for the Q (pulled pork? brisket?) and beer! I have less than zero mechanical apptitude, so it is either feed you guys or pay Les...are you guys game?

Thanks Tom, I might take you up on your offer. Saturday, I'm going up to Twin Bridges to install my new Furuno 1623 Radar. Hopefully, that won't take more than a day. Then Sunday, I might try to tackle the AutoPilot.

BTW, as you once wrote in a thread, "I Love My Wife!". She not only previously approved the purchase of the radar but after the Lopez gathering, upon hearing Fred's recommendation, she approved the AutoPilot as well. Thanks Fred!

Tom, we'll see how the radar install goes. If I'm ready to tackle the Autopilot on Sunday, I'll drop by your house to check out your install.

Toni and I installed the S1000 2 or 3 months ago on a Saturday, a mechanic I am not, but we had a successful installation. We gave it a good workout at the Lopez gathering and the week after cruising the islands and it works great. We didn't use it for trolling but for going in a straight line or from waypoint to waypoint....it will really spoil you.
They put everything in the box that you will need. We have a 25' so you may have to install diferently, the pump fit nicely, snuggled in with the wiring oposite the steering wheel, I put the course computer under the engine controls mounted on the starboard side of the plywood that encloses the refridgerator, it has to be mounted vertically. (I hope that confused you less than me) Just follow the directions, the bleeding worked just as they described it would, do remove anything you don't want to get oil on cuz it can be a little messy no matter how careful you are. I used mine for trolling this past weekend-- worked great. I troll at 1.5 - 2 knots. Worked on the straight and the zig/zag, tried all 3 levels, liked the "L" best. Didn't try the other options.

Russ, thanks for the info on your install. One question, with the pump being installed where it is (it sounds like it's installed on the back of the helm where the wiring is), does it make a lot of noise? If not, I'll probably install it in the same general area. The installation video sure makes it look easy. Too easy in fact but it's good to know you installed it by yourself. Glad to hear it works well.

You too, Roger. Glad you were able to test all your troll patterns. Caryn and I are looking forward to the time when we can both be in the cockpit fishing, with no one having to steer at the helm.

Tom, I'll probably be installing the radar on Saturday afternoon but thanks for the invite. BBQ sounds good. My bride will actually be in Atlanta with her daughter, so I'm left alone to play on the boat all weekend Laughing

I'll give you a call on Sunday if I have time to stop by and check out your installation.

Peter, The pump does make a little noise but nothing you can't live with. The hoses included with the kit are pretty short so you can't put it too far from the existing steering pump. You will notice the pump more at displacement speeds as it makes more corrections than when on plane, but the performance will make up for the inconvenience of a little noise. I think you will like it.

Mine is installed under the helm with the computor to port of the wheel and the pump next to the hull. Yes, there is noise, but as Russ said- the convenience over rides the noise.
If you set a waypoiont, be sure to stay on course when you set the pilot to follow the course. Otherwise, the pilot will search for the course and you may be in for a ride.
We were out for a sunset cruise with some friends, Pat was standing behind me and our friends were on the sofa. I was off course when I set the pilot- the gal sitting across from me wound up on my lap as the boat turned sharp to port. I told her that was my SOS turn--- Slide Over Sweety. Wink

Thanks guys. Final question. As I was reading the manual, it said that the default was "Fishing Mode" and not to change it to Sail or Power mode. It also noted that the settings were for trolling speeds for fishing. Have you set up the AutoPilot to follow a GPS track at cruising speed? If so, do you need to change the mode to Power to cruise at, say 18 knots or will it work just fine staying in Fish Mode? The manual said it affects the calibration if you do.

This is definitely a thing that makes you go HMMM?

I leave it in fishing mode and it follows track at cruising speed.
