Tug,

I bought plastic saddle tanks from Overton's catalog and installed them on a CD 22 Angler. This was years ago, but they were around $85 each, fittings and hoses extra. I covered and supported them with aluminum sheating. I was a highway contractor and had access to old highway signs, lots of free aluminum. The tanks were 20 gallons each.

Brent that boat must have really leaned with you and a full bait tank on the same side? I willing to bet that if you had to pay for the alum you used the price would have jumped up a LOT. Nice install.

Tug – that seems like a high quote for the saddle tanks. We have two 30 gallon saddle tanks with all the particulars listed in your quote plus an extra baffle and two steps on each tank for less than a thousand dollars. The tanks are custom made with compound bends and angle aluminum to act as shelf lips. You should get a quote from Coastline Equipment. Even with shipping, I believe the cost will be less than your quote.

Fore and AFt Marine has 20 gallon Todd poly saddle tanks for $199. You should be able to get aluminum tanks in the $500 to $550 range. You are using a thicker aluminum than is usually used for that size tank, and I suspect a lot of costs in custom fabrication, vs assembly line tanks.

Tom,

The bait tank was for offshore Tuna or Dorado fishing, Sardines or other small bait. The gunnel chair was for Bass fishing, backing along the shore and casting to the fish. I never really used both the chair and the tank at the same time.

The saddle tanks were made by Todd and sold by Overton's. Probable what Dr. Bob indicated.

Tug – just to be clear, the price I quoted for our tanks was for both tanks, not per tank.

Just received an e-mail referring to a quote request from another large tank fabricator in NJ which stated: U.S.C.G. specs. states that no diesel or gas tank can be hung from mounting tabs and must be supported from the bottom.I guess i won't be getting a price quote from them. Tug

How do saddle tanks affect performance?

I would expect them to help stabilize the boat at anchor, but make it less stable in rough conditions (slower to roll with the swell).

Is the effect noticeable, or only theoretic?

I received another price quote from the place Dave ( oldgrowth ) recommended:

I tried to get a hold of you but was unable.Quote for 2 21 gal. fuel
tanks built using 1/8" 5052-H32 alum. Your cost $433.34 ea. plus freight
$96.50. The total $963.18. I had trouble reading the drawing, everything
is so small and I am not able to in large. Please call tom @
360-734-____ to discuss or order
thanks tom

I called Tom and we went thru the drawings:this quote doesn't include powder coating and the bracket that epoxy's to the hull side because i figure that i would need to make a template first before fabricating it.

This is a much more realistic price.. Tug

Tug – here you go.

Tom at CoastLine is a good man and CoastLine is a company that has been building marine tanks since the 50s. I never give absolute guarantees but if you have CoastLine build your tanks, I would be surprised if you were disappointed with the tanks or workmanship. The aluminum angle iron we have on top of the tank is because we use the top of the tank as a shelf. You probably will not do that so the weld at the top of the tank will not be on the tanks you get.

Powercoating will add quite a bit to the cost. It is something we offer as an option on the Marinaut but I am not sure it is worth the extra cost. We add some nonskid to the exposed side as you can see in the last photo. On the tanks I made for my 16-18 C-Dory, I just painted them and they have held up very well.

Dave, great pictures and the gas tanks look perfect on the boat. The gas tanks from CoastLine really look strong and well fabricated. Powder coating looks good but i didn't know it was expensive to have it done, painting sounds a lot better. Thanks Tug

Someday I will have a set of 20 gallon saddle tanks, tell than I’ll be hog tying my gas cans on the stern cleats when empty. Keeps them out of the way and adds to the sampan look we love so dearly.

Very Happy
