Forced upgrade from Honda 135 to 150

(I don't mean forced in a negative way)Got a call from C-Dory today and it seems that someone(s) misjudged the number of Honda 135's that would be sold between the Seattle Boat Show time and now. C-dory is out of them and Honda can't ship more for at least three months or maybe longer. (Jim and Laurie got one of the last ones.) So the alternative is to go with the 150 if we want to keep the Honda financing that was the big come-on at the show. I don't think this was at all contrived by C-Dory. So. Looks like Pat and I will have a little more HP at the 4000-6000 RPM range. Probably won't use it much, but it's there if needed. And I will have to say that C-Dory is making it as painless as they can.

Well, that shouldn't be too hard to deal with, especially if CD made the switch out less painful... We just ordered the CD 25 with the 150. I received a test report from Honda with the CD 25 w/ 150 Honda that I sea trialed at the Miami Boat Show. Be happy to share it with whomever is interested. Based on my sea-trial and the report, the 150 seems like a pretty sweet pairing with the 25. Congratulations on your new boat!

Yeah, crying in my beer over this one! Seriously, had not considered the 150 really, but not complaining at all! Best news, Scott Mathews says they MAY be able to move our production slot up a little sooner...that would be good news indeed, feeling really weird being boatless...

You should have more torque across the rpm range. Torque is what pushes the boat. Horsepower remains a mathematical forumula based purely on torque and rpm.

To those who want the Honda 150 on a CD 25 report, please send an email to me at tjm@bmpinc.com (I can't figure out how to attach the .pdf file here). I was told that any given motor may not necessarily come with the same Solas prop that was tested, but any prop of similar size and pitch should have similar results.

Thanks TJ, interesting. Seems like I want to be at either 3500 RPM/14.9 MPH/3.8GPH/3.9 MPG or 4500 RPM/23.0 MPH/6.3 GPH/3.7MPG for the optimum performance.

Yes, the sweet spots are definitely at 3500 rpm (14.9 mph/ 3.9 mpg) or 4500 rpm (23 mph/ 3.7 mpg). The 4000 rpm (18.0 mph/3.5 mpg) isn't too bad, most other boaters would kill for that economy. I would have thought 18 mph might be a more practical fast cruise speed here in the bay when it gets snotty than 23.0 mph. However, I had the Miami test boat at 4500 rpm for quite a while in Biscayne Bay, and the water was lousy with boat-wake chop (all the sea-trialers), and the CD 25 ride was fairly smooth and it felt like we were standing still. So perhpas I'll get more use out of that 4500 rpm band than I thought. We can't wait to sea-trial our own boat, of course. She's in production now, and I may get some photos of her in the shop. If we do, I'll definitely post 'em.

OK, anybody have a FloScan digital fuel flow meter, which tells you gallons per hour and when connected to your GPS also gives you miles per gallon? Having this information available to adjust rpms under actual conditions really seems like it would be great. But looking at Google results these puppies seem to be around $1,500 - if that is right, I will gladly go with the reported sweet spots...if anybody does have one, where did you get it, which model, how much did it cost and did it repay its cost in fuel savings?

Hi,

I received the actual Honda pdf from TJ above, and at the bottom of the sheet it says "source: NM Digital Guage / GPS. So this data is from I guess the Navman Digital meter.

I have purchased but not yet installed the FloScan 9000-20B-1 which also includes a digital tack as well ast the GPH/MPG and gallons used when connected to my Garmin MFD via one of the NMEA ports. I bought it here for $529: http://www.pyacht.net but it was drop shipped from Seattle. I chose the FloScan even though it is pricey since it will replace exactly the Honda analog Tach and because I didn't want to crowd the wiring bulkhead behind the helm any further nor make any more holes. The autopilot pump will go there and the depth sounder black box is already there. I will gather data on my BF135 and post it at some future date, later in the season.

There was another owner of a CD25w/BF150 : "Minnow ", who used the Honda digital guage set that seems to have fuel data right from the engines computer.

Gotjm3, I also had a copy of the Prop Test. Like you, I was surprised that the 4500rpm "sweet spot" gave better MPG than the ones at 3500 and 4000.

Typically, planing hulls get the highest MPG at the lower displacement speeds, then drop quickly when the boat struggles to get up on a plane.

Once a clean plane is achieved, the lowest clean planing speed usually gives the highest planing MPG.

The Honda 150 on the 25 bettered the lower cruising speeds by delivering 23 MPH and 3.7 GPH at 4500 rpm. Very usable for inland waters, although perhaps a bit much for all but the calmest days offshore.

I'm wondering if it is just a coincidence that the VTEC on the 150 switches from the low speed cam lobe to the high speed at 4500 rpm?
