Bob,
We monitor 16 and 68.
Depends on the water. We may be up east of Painted cave if the water is nice.
There is a little cove up that way where I've caught several halibut, may want to dive it and see what we find. I'll have my sawed off magnum with me, and my scooter.
If the channel is bumpy, we'll be on the front side, near Alberts. Maybe some squid and WSB will show.
opps-- can't talk fishing if PJ's going to be on board _________________ Roger

Scott,
Cell reception is marginal at best at the islands. Tell your wife to call the Coast Guard Station at Channel Islands if an emergency. I'll let them know about it and have them contact me by radio. Don't sweat it. _________________ Mike - Sealife |

Roger,
Just East of Painted Cave, that sounds like one of my favorite overnight spots, Cuava Valdez! If so, it has a really neat cave to get on/off your dingy.
Maybe I'm backwards, but I always thought the 'front' side of the islands is the side facing the coast, the backside the one away from the coast (facing Japan...)??? _________________ Steve & Carmen

At Cueva Valdez, many years ago, I caught a 38lb halibut plus other assorted types, all large. |

Hey Mike, do you remember what you used for bait? Probably same would still work!
Roger, do you think swimbaits and squid will be sufficient for the types of fish we're going after? Or, need live bait fill up also? |

We should be able to make bait once we get over there. I saw tons of bait today.
The cove I'm thinking of is only large enough for 2, maybe 3 boats to overnight. But the ledge near the cove is where I caught 5-6 halibut. It drops off deep at the edge. Sometimes there is squid off the edge.
No love on the salmon today. Several boats in the area, but no one was catching anything more than some shut-eye.
The water was lumpy going out this morning, calmed down around 0900, then the wind came up around 1100. |

When are y'all planning on departing Santa Cruz for home? Does it depend on the fishing???

Bought a Fortress stern anchor today, along with 15' of chain. Been meaning to do it....this trip got me off the dime. Fortress is light weight and easy to store, and very effective, so I'm told.
Steve,
Used live bait (anchovies) on that halibut, if memory serves.
Supposed to be good weather this week.....hope it holds for the weekend. |

National Weather Service;
.FRI THROUGH SAT...W WIND 10 TO 15 KT IN THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS..OTHERWISE WIND LIGHT. WIND WAVES 2 FT OR LESS. W SWELL 5 TO 7 FT. SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS.
It was rough out there yesterday, I could see whitecaps all the way out from UCSB. Look fair right now. Best for a morning crossing.
I'll be ready to leave around 0900, after the hoist opens. |

Hey Roger, is Prisoners an option for diving? My neighbor came over the other day and said last year he tackled the largest spider crab he's ever seen, about 30" leg to leg, or rather, did it tackle him? Anchored between the pier and westward cliffs, went straight down in 30 ft of water, nearly landed on top of the crab! Said eating was marginal, too old, too tough. |

Who all is committed to going? Is there an updated list? Will everybody be heading out of Channel Islands Saturday morning? I plan on going on the getaway. I have a new stern anchor and am ready to spend my first night on the anchor. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

I'm going at this point. Also bought a new stern anchor. Debating whether to take my dingy. Weather looks ok. Will be down at the landing on friday, leaving for the islands on saturday around 9:00am. |

Prisoners may be an option for diving, I'm thinking about Pratts. There is a sandy ledge that tends to hold halibut, with a rocky point extending out on the east end, then it drops off.
Looks like 7 boats;
Fishtales
Islander
Sealife
Dora~Jean
Li'l Rascal
Dive Cat
Wreck Diver?
I expect to be ready to make the crossing around 0900
The water is beautiful today, looks like it will be nice this weekend with a chance of showers Saturday. The swell and winds are forecast to be from the west, so it looks like Smugglers or Yellowbanks for anchoring over night.
Dive Cat will be joining later in the day.
I run with the radio scanning 16 & 68 |

DAS BOOT is out. Its gonna be a looooong weekend of work. The harder I pushed to clear the weekend, they harder I got pushed back. ( But it pays for the fun. )
Hoping for great WX for all of you. Let me know how cool Painted Cave looks with a few C-Dory's inside.
Sorry !
