Hey Roger,

That "weekend" was pegged for Catalina...but if anyone (Bob would be great company, I'm sure) would consider staying Mon-Wed...we would be up for a trip North...even though we really miss Catalina. Wish we could be there Sat and Sun...working weekends rots.

Spent the day in the Gap (Anacapa / Santa Cruz) listened in on the radio with Eric (Peace) and Tim (Scepter) Dive Boats-- they were trying to find some decent water for diving. The best they could find was only 10' vis. Hope it clears up in the next couple weeks.

The water was flat and calm today, with a small south/west swell- 2 to 3 foot at maybe 12 seconds.

Roger I think we have more rain coming this week, so it may take a little while to clear.

Channel Islands Quickie gang,

So now that we have a date that we are going to Santa Cruz, what is the thoughts of everyone for anchorages? I have never overnighted at SC so I would like to hear your thoughts.

Ron,
Smugglers at the East end is the easiest for sure, as long as there aren't Santa Ana's blow'n. Roger and others may have other ideas, maybe depends on where we plan to dive.

Roger,
Nice bunch of fish! I thought it would have been rough out there because of the Westerly winds blowing in Simi today. Never can tell, just got to get out there and check for yourself. Yes, hope the vis gets better, 10 feet ain't much.

Ron,

Hopefully the rain will stay north of us, but I doubt it Sad

Smugglers is a good anchorage most of the time. We usually have a westerly swell. When the swell is south/westerly (like today) it can have a little bump.

It was a little better, today, in Little Scorpion. We'll see what the swells are in a couple weeks.

Do we need to notify the authorities here?

Scott,
I don't know-- if shes "very Pregnant", it may take a couple anchors Laughing

Some parts of the islands have service- some areas --no.

It depends on where we anchor. Some anchorages are small and best to use two anchors. If we anchor at Smugglers, we can use one anchor.

It was bumpy out there today- south swell. Not very good for Smugglers. Prisoners would have been a good choice for today.
We'll have to wait and see what the swell is when we go.

Best to have a second anchor just in case.

Funny comments guys. By the way what will I need to purchase for a second anchor? What type is best? Chain? Rope? I have nothing, so a checklist of things to get would be nice. Thanks,

Scott

Bob, Katy and Mika will be arriving on station Saturday afternoon, weather permitting, or Sunday morning. We have to stop at Channel Islands to get the window covers and cushions measured.

We've got the BBQ, the scallop liberation tool and the air supply (hopefully). Anyone know where the halibut might be?

Scott,

For my stern anchor I use a smaller Bruce that I already had. 10' of 1/4" chain and about 150' of 1/2" nylon 3 part all coiled in a milk crate. Keep it light enough to carry and manually retrieve.

Anchoring procedures depend alot on conditions at the time and expected while at anchor. I'd like to have my bow pointed out, so I'd manually drop my stern anchor shallow and pay out all the line with a buoy on the end. Drop it over. Go forward and lower the bow anchor, backing to the stern buoy. Pick up buoy and bring in appropriate amount of line, then tighten up bow.

Or, if it's really calm, drop the bow, back in as far as you can, drop the stern and move forward. Probably won't get as much scope but with light boats, light current and winds, we'd probably be okay.

Hey, Roger

We have an appointment with your canvas girl about 1100 at C.I., then were on our way. Are you going to be on 78 or 82, or can we just hail on 16? We'll head for the east end unless you tell us different.
