Looks like the third Saturday of September is the 20th this year...so our gathering in Oak Canyon will be September 20th, 2014. The water guessers seem to think the water situation will be slightly better this year...so levels should be similar to last year.
I will be leaving the Wahweap marina store around noon on the 19th and heading up lake...anyone that wants to tag along is welcome...otherwise we will meet up in Oak Canyon on Saturday for our gathering and potluck...then on up lake over the next week returning to Wahweap on Friday the 26th. Reading past threads on Lake Powell gatherings will answer most of your questions about this cruise...but we will be happy to help in this thread if anything else comes up.

Finally got to one of these in 2012 at Powell. It was great fun. 2013 had me out with some minor cancer treatments. 2014 is promising to be a great boating season for "Still C-razy," including Powell in September. _________________ You can tell a man his wife is ugly, but never ever criticize his dog, his gun, his truck or his boat.

We are hoping to be there this year. IF we go, we will be there at least a week ahead of time and "resereve" one of the large areas in Oak Canyon. Always look forward to the Lake Powell gatherings! _________________ Bob Austin

After the get together on Lake Powell, Diana and I are planning on putting the boat in short term storage at Bullfrog, then heading back to the Four Corners area to finish the trip that was interrupted by last year's government shutdown.
We are going to poke around the Cedar Mesa area, then hit some of the places that we missed. Canyon de Chelly, Mesa Verda, Canyon of the Ancients, and other spots that catch our fancy. The focus of the trip will be photography, and just plain old hiking and poking around. There are some photography guides that in addition to providing information on where/what/when to shoot, have great general tourist information about some of the more remote sites. Check out "Photographing the Southwest", volumes 1-3, by Laurent Martres.
If anyone is interested in joining us, please feel free to send me a PM. We will have our truck camper for this part of the journey.
Does anyone have a recommendation for short term storage at Bullfrog?

I think you have your choice from Offshore Marine and Ticaboo. |

My wife and I are new to the group but we are planning to be at the gathering on Lake Powell. We will be there early so any info as to where to put in at or any other info would be helpful. Looking forward to see everyone on the lake. |

Flint, we usually come across 10 and then go up to 40, and finally up HWY 89 From I 40 Near Flagstaff to Page AZ. To us the advantage launching at Page (Wahweap) is that there is a Walmart (and other facilities, along with cheaper (not cheap) fuel there. The alternative is BullFrog/Halls crossing, further up the Lake (Mile 95) and past where we meet the first night at Oak Canyon. There is also a "marina" with fuel, water and some supplies (mostly ice and ice-cream) at Dangling Rope. (Mile 41) (Oak Canyon is about mile 51). When we go early we explore some of the canyons, maybe even up the San Juan Arm, and then fuel, water and ice up at Dangling Rope before the group arrives.
A couple of suggestions: We like to keep the laminated Aerial map by Anton Frankovich Jr with photos of the coves and lake on the dinette table. (Have to do some clipping). We like the Boater's Guide to Lake Powell, 5th edition Paperback. by Michael R. Kelsey Also the Fish-N-Map to Lake Powell S and N. There is also the Stan Jones map which many like.
We use the Navionics Lake chart of Powell on the I pad--a few places show land where there is lake and visa versa, but try hand on on the lake, and the projected coarse line shows you which canyon you are looking or heading up toward.
Finally Several of us have Annotated the "Skipper Marine chart" app. By default it goes to a good topomap of Lake Powell, and we have some of the canyons and anchorages in place. This year we will add more of the places to explore. This app gives your boat on the topo map, which is of great value because of the chaining contours of the lake as the pool level goes up and down. The marine charts do not show these contours.
There are also chart chips for Powell. We happen to have the Garmin Lake charts, which includes Powell.
Keep in touch, and most likely several of us can meet up a week or so early and do some exploration. |

Powell was my first CBGT as well (2012, on a friend's boat). It was fantastic. Chris was a great trip leader for our first few days (we arrived halfway through the week), and we learned the basic "Powell ropes." After that we spread our own wings for a couple of weeks. Perfect combo (although I sure wouldn't have minded a bit more group time).
I learned a lot by reading through the Powell gathering threads of the past five years or so (many questions answered), and what I learned really worked well as far as what to bring, what to expect, ways to anchor, etc. Powell style boating on a C-Dory was completely different from what I was used to. So, I would suggest finding those older threads (they are in this same sub-forum, one for each fall).
I went last fall on my own boat (first real trip with it!) and hope to be there again this year. If so, see you there!
