howdy folks, new c-dory owner. I have been able to get about 4750 RPM with my current 3by15by15.25 aluminum prop. I have acquired a 3by 15.5by13 prop and wish to install it. wonder if any of you experts can tell me what size is the prop nut on thehonda 135. I am thinking that it would be a good idea to carry a prop tool, a spare nut, and cotter pin, and of course a spare prop.
My wife linda and I are new to the c-brats and really looking fwd to the comraderie. I am a retired USMC helo pilot (went back to work for teh gov't after retirementy) living on the coast of NC. we take our c-dory out as often as the wx and the work schedule will allow it. great time using her so far.

Hi Ron,
Welcome to the group. We need more Marines. Too many Navy types in this boating community. Actually they are some pretty good folks, and I think highly of them.
I spent a few years fixing some of the birds that you guys broke. I was in from '67 to '77, getting out as a Gunny.
Your boat sounds nice! If you ever drag it out to the left coast, please let us know. We would love to show you the countryside.
Kind Regards,

Hi Touchdown! Welcome aboard. Not sure about the prop nut on the 135, we've had twin 45's and now twin Suzi 115's on the TC. Best way to find out for sure is to tilt that sucker up in shallow water and try a socket on it. Once the cotter pin is out, shouldn't be too hard to loosen. If you do it in the water, hang a bucket under it, those parts don't float!
Good idea to have the spares, let us know what you find out!
Charlie

Thanks fellas glad to come aboard always glad to have a couple of fellow ship mates along for the ride. Good to hear from you Gunny Steve. always like to hear from fellow marines. will most definitely look you up if and when my wife and I get out to your neck of the country. hope you will do the same if you ever get to the coast of NC.
and Capt, glad to hear from you as well. I went back to work for NAVAIRSYSCOM after retiring and get up to paxtuxent river fairly often, not to far from your neck of the woods. the invitation to NC stands for swabbies as well.
yep, next step is to find a good shallow spot and see which size socket fits. Once I have a west marine close buy and will check with them to see if they have a prop tool that fits. once I get the size all figured out I will pass the word.

Get a prop nut kit to take as a spare. It includes nut, cotter pin, and washer. The nut is 18 mm. |

Hi and welcome to the c-brats, great group of people.
I have a cd 25 with a 135 honda. I wasn't happy with the prop and spent a lot of time talking and emailing people and it seems everybody has a different thought on pitch and diameter. Anyway my boat came with a stainless 3 141/2x15 prop, and I think it was over propped. I went to an aluminum 3 15.5x13 and it works better for my boat, easier to get on a plane, a bit better gas milage although my top end rpm dropped about 50 rpms.
Though I'd share all of this even though you didn't really ask about it....
enjoy your new boat _________________ bill & chris carli

sounds like your boat had pretty much the same problem mine has now. I am really anxious to get the props changed and see how the 3 by 15.5 by 13 works out. I am not getting my boat to plane out at all and the maximum WOT RPM is never abover 4750. thanks a bunch for the insight , I was starting to think that maybe my throttle was rigged incorrectly. But now, I am pretty sure it is simply over proped, just liker yours. My wife, Linda, and I are taking the USMC Dory out after work for an evening at the outer banks. I hope to exchange the props while out this weekend. I will let all you very helpful folks know the outcome. have a great weekend. TD |

Try this place:
http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard%20Engine/parts.html
They've got a diagram there and say that the nut is 18mm. Other parts avilable by the each, didn't see a prop kit but you can make one up. Just, click, order and wait for the delivery. No pain, no gas!

the prop nut is 27 MM happens to fit a 18 MM drive shaft. PURCHASED A 1 AND 1/16 INCH SOCKET AND COMPARED IT TO THE CLOSEST MM SOCKET WHicH WAS 27 mm. I PURCHASED A 27mm 12 POINT SoCKET (from Sears = $ THAT FIT PERFECTLY. changed the prop for the 3 by 15.5 by 13. very disappointing, still cannot get over 4750 or so WOT RPM. reduced my top end speed from about 24 MPH to about 20. Tough to make an apples to apples comparison since I had to refuel and had four adulos on the boat today in about 12 ft seas. I am going to run th new prop a few more times. starting to think that I should figure out how to check the throttle rigging to see if I am getting full wide open throttle. any ideas on where to get the 411 on how to check for proper throttle rigging. but not to worry still had a great time on the water today enjoying good wx and warm water. Have you changed your fuel filter? Something is going on there besides the prop size. |
