I am always looking for something better when it comes to lures. over the years I have came up with a few thing that have caught on locally and latter became popular with guides and that have even been sold by some one else. It has never been a new produce from scratch, but the use of a product in a new way. Well I found some thing new today in the bass section that got me excided and I new right away what I was going to use it for and how. so I would like to share it with you and see what you think.
The produce is a new plastic bait fish by basstrix in 4 inch blue smoke. this items comes in ten colors and three sizes but this is the best one for my purposes, which is black mouth fishing. Now what got me hooked on this little guy was how much its shape and color matched a candle fish or small herring. More the candle fish and thats the main winter food for black mouth. This bait has a hollow center to allow it to float with neutral boynance. It was made for drop shotting technic. This lends it to my set up which is going to be for trolling. so heres what you do.
first buy a bait needle with a line hook on the end. then from the bottom rear of the bait threat the needle into the hollow center and out to the center of the head.
Then slide the bait all the way down the needle until just the line hook is still showing. now just pass a line thru the hook and hold a couple of inches worth in you fingers and then slide the bait on to the line. Oh this line should already have a hook snelled to the far end.
here you can see why having a hollow center is so good, the bait needle does not tear up the bait at all.
now your bait should look like this , but you are not thru yet.
Now to get some action out of this guy when trolling we need a lip or some thing that will make it move. I have found these action disc in the fly department. supposed to and action to salt water flys trolled in the wake of a boat or on a long line behind the boat. I just thread one on above the bait and embed it in to the bait. now just troll this set up behind a flash and se what happens. also the hollow center should hold and bleed scent pretty well. I will have to see.

Good luck Tom. Are you going blackmouth fishing this weekend. Should be clear and cold. If you need a fishing partner, let me know.

Boy that's a real NATURAL looking bait. I recall fishing at Mid-Channel Bank and the blackmouth had scarred gill-plates from foraging the bottom for candle-fish. When I gutted my catch the contents were a dead ringer for your "basstrix". _________________ Pete

BTW, I believe these baits were called candlefish because there was a time when folks twisted them up and burned them as candles. |

Good idea, Tom!
Especially let us know about the landlocked Kings in Folsom. We have them in Shasta Lake too, so I'm especially interested.

Tom you didn't mention where you found these. Was it at one of the mail order places. I troll alot in December and January for Spotted Seatrout and I experiment a lot with different things. The plunger looking deal you added to add action looks interesting. _________________ marvin |

New name, "three thumbs". Hope it doesn't stick. But the bait is pretty cool. When you make a major discovery like that it can be earth shaking. Let's hope this is one of them. I remember back about 1970 when a friend gave me a Rapala. I had been bass fishing for a couple years, using nightcrawlers and the very exotic "hula popper" with mixed success. I took that Rapala down to the Willamette to a favorite slough and tossed it into a sunning school of largemouth and they went crazy. I caught 75 fish that day. In those days Rapalas were foil covered. Ruined that lure in one day. But it really took off. It would be so cool if this new bait had that type of success. I will have to hit Sportsmans on the way home and see if they have any of the makings. It looks terrific to me. Just like the candlefish that used to school up in Elliott Bay Marina, identical. |

dog if you think thats cool you should see my third leg
I started using small grub curly tails plastic worms on troll gear for trout instead of really worms in the early 90's with great sucess. I showed it to a few guides that I fished with in a localy club and six months later they where being sold as trout worms by a large northen ca. tackle maker and he writes about them in his book. I just like knowing that started a new trend. Its like pink worms here for steelhead. five years ago no one used them now they are a common lure in a steelheaders tackle box. It just took one guy going " you know that bass worm looks like a string of salmon eggs" now there are five companys that make pink steelhead worms. |

Quite correct. Though I don't know if it was twisting or some other process. At one time was the main trade item for the Nash River area Indians. The Nash Rivers exits into the Pacific in Observatory Inlet which is between Prince Rupert and Portland Canal. Had candle fish trade trails branching out from this area to almost the arctic ocean. Learned about this when checking out the lava flows in this area where over 2000 Indians were killed by an eruption not all that long ago.
