Hey Ron_
Thanks for re-posting the best C-Dory photo ever taken! (IMHO)
I'm not disputing the rocket launchers suitability for larger rod use, just that there may be better systems for inland lake fishermen.
Not just in the C-Dory, but in boating in general, there seems to be some "mistique" or "misstique", if you will, about rocket launchers, in my opinion.
Folks seem to think they make a boat look more sporty, professional, or serious with them. And the more the better, making one look very accomplished and esteemed, etc.
Do you really need 21 rocket launchers if you aren't in the charter business or landing at Normandy on D-Day???
I just think it's worthwhile to point this out to folks before they make a Christmas Tree of Rocket Launchers out of their boat!
Fun topic, either way, or opinion!

I really like the launchers better than the original pole holders that were in the cockpit where I now have my second helm station. If I could only figure out a really good way to get the darn cooler up and outoftheway when I'm fishing. I do use it for a seat, and as a semi live well, but out on the ocean I'd like a clear deck. I use the port lazarette for batteries to balance out my starboard position on the kicker. Never quite have enough room on these things, and just when you solve a problem, you find more to address. Anyway, I only have 2 pole-holders for on the splash well board, and 3 on the downriggers, and 6 pole holders on the rocket launcher, plus a pole holder used as a net holder. I can however use 2 of the rocket launcher slots for when I use my "outriggers". Whoa, I got to get a couple of more poles!!!!! |

Now wait a minute Joe, are you implying that 16 is too many rod holders for a 22?
Old photo (pre radar and some other stuff) but you get the idea. I occasionally troll with seven or eight lines. Rare because you need days with no fish and no waves. But even with four of five lines out it is nice to be able to shift them from side to side to land fish etc. I have eight rod holders for trolling plus you can run a leadcore from the roof rocket launchers. The four vertical holders on the transom are for transport and shuffling. A couple of other old pics in my album.
Regards and wish I were fishing.

Hey Mark!
Seven or eight trolling lines at once, eh?
Do you sometimes get the Big Snafu of Tangled Lines?
One of our local guides trolls with seven lines, but he double stacks them two per downrigger,, etc.
At least having a second or more rod is legal in Michigan, apparently. Here in California, you have to have a Two-Rod Stamp ($12.00) with your License ($40+)to use a second rod. The fine for a second rod w/o the stamp or for a third rod, etc. is about $400 per rod!!!
Nice being able to troll with so many offerings at once until you find out what they're biting on!
Go treat yourself: four more rocket launchers for Christmas!

This year I didn't fish nearly enough and when I did I never had more than six lines out. My best day I used only three lines.
In Michigan you can troll with three lines per person for Salmonoids on the Great Lakes. I think Wisconsin went to three lines some years ago and then Michigan followed suit the last three years. It is only for trolling on the Great Lakes in those states. All other fishing is with two lines only. Ontario is one line or at least it used to be.
Best is when you can never get more than a couple of lines in because the action is hot. Pretty good is a double or even the rare triple. I will sometimes use three downriggers (sometimes I also used fixed sliders and more rarely use sliders or stacked lines). I will then have one or two dipsy rods on each side and possibly a leadcore line down the middle and way back. That is how I might use eight lines on a calm boring day. Most often I fish with four or five lines. Two or three downriggers and two or three dipsys. I have been using rotating flashers with attractors and flies or cut herring a lot the last few years. Running more than four lines with that type of spread is usually your invitation to the big snafu. Most of all, the problem is usually the wind and waves. Sometimes the waves are just too much for mechanical or human pilots to keep even two or three lines straight without 100% concentration. I fish lots of times when you can only troll one direction - downhill, but don't like to fish when leaving the helm is dangerous.

Here's an option I just stumbled upon: CE Smith top-mount rod holders.
They are fixed at a 20 degree angle and can be mounted to a rail in either parallel or perpendicular orientation. And they fit the 7/8" existing roof rail of a CD 22. I'm tempted to put a couple at the back end of both rails as sort of a pain-free (except for the price $76/ea.) rocket launcher.

Hi Everyone,
I like to have several Rod Holders to hold Rods when I am not fishing, that I can reach anywhere I am. One thing that Is my Pet Pee is to lay rods down on the side or the floor in the way, that bothers me. I Striper fish in Va. with four Downriggers some time stack them, and have two planer Boards on the side. If you go through a School of Stripers you or your fishing buddy has got their hands full, my fishing partner is my wife & my best friend, we have had 4 on at one time, that will get you excited quick. When that happens you try to bring in the fish and you have got rod holders any where to place the rod in quickly, to get it out of the way to work the others.
I am not going to say how many I have got with the Rocket Lanchers on top, but you will never see a rod layed down in the way to trip over one.
