I had a email about winterzing a c-dory and engine, Hey what would I know about winter storage, never done it and hope not to. Fish at least once a month all year. But the question of fogging a engine came up. Do you fog a four stroke for storage the way you do a two stroke. I could not think of a reason why not, but that does not mean there is not a good reason. So I put it out there for discussion To fog or not to fog?

P.s. My biggest german brown was hook on a lake at 7am on christmass eva in the sierras at 4500 ft. there was 3ft of snow on the bank and a high of 28* I was in a open 12ft boat with a 25hp with a now ex girl friend ,don't know why she left, took 20 mins to land 6lb fish on light gear. Wallas we don't need a no stinking wallas.

Whenever we left a diesel, 2 stroke, or 4 stroke engine for more than 3 months without starting, we fogged it. We also changed the oil, and put in storage additatives after shutting the engine down.

My recollection from many years back is that fogging a two stroke engine involved spraying the fogging oil into the air intake while the engine was running until the engine stalled out. This was an attempt to get as much fogging oil into the crankcase as possible. I don't winterize my four stroke the same way. I just remove a sparkplug and but the fogging oil into the cylinder and then turn it over a few times.

For V-8 inboards, I used to dump transmission fluid down the carb with the
engine running until it stalled out, basically. But, for an outboard, I would pull
the plugs, spray, and crank.

My Yamaha 40's are 4 stroke, and still under warranty so they go to the Marine mechanic/Yamaha Dealer. I just talked to them last week and they do fog them, however I do not know the exact process (into the air intake or into the cyclinders). Either way, they do the service until the warranty is expired.

As to the now X- girfriend, Tom, I bet she got to go along just to chop the ice from around the boat, right?

I have twin 140 hp suzuki four strokes on my Tomcat. The dealer told me not to fog them through the air intake because the fogging oil harms the computer sensors. Instead, he runs a 50:1 gas and oil mixture through the engines and then takes the spark plugs out to fog the cylinders.
