I just traded my 1997 15’ Armia Sea Sprinter w/50 HP Honda for a new 2006 C-Dory Angler w/DF50 HP Suzuki. This site had a lot of influence on my decision to trade my Armia. The Armia was an awesome boat but I hope the C-Dory will be even better. Now to buy all the new toys to outfit the boat.

I have a couple of questions for some of you seasoned pros.

First is a new name, I’m thinking of Gone Fish’N since thats mostly what I do in a boat, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Second I would like to know if mounting my VHF and GPS Antennas on the roof rail would be a better choice than mounting them on the deck. I also want to buy new planar reels to mount on the rails instead of a mast up front for connivence and easy of use. Rod holders and down-riggers should be a now brainer mounting them on the gunnels. Any and all advice will be considered a PLUS.

Thanks in advance,
Charlie

Charlie,

Congratulations on your new boat. We are expecting our new one in Nov. I am having the same problem as you...what should i name her? I will watch the suggestions you get and maybe it will inspire me. I was going to name the boat after my beautiful wife but she gets angry with me alot and the boat maybe used for a quick escape.

I called my 16'er GIZMO. So, you might not like my suggestion for a boat name. BUT, the other day we were putting a new main sail on a 44'er. I told the skipper he should name a boat " NEW SHOES" Very Happy

Charlie

I have VHF, GPS, & radar mounted to the roof rails on my 16' cruiser with the cables running to the back of the roof. There are no holes in the roof for the cables. Plastic ties keep everything bundled nicely. I prefer the nylon rail mounts for the antennas.

On a C Dory there is no real reason to have the GPS antennas out side of the cabin. (Our CD 25 has two GPS: one the antenna is mounted on the shelf over the foreward cabin, and the other has an internal antenna)--this means less "stuff" on the roof. There is virtually no loss of accuracy or practical signal strength loss thru the fiberglass roof.

The VHF antenna: consider it may be broken if a fiberglass antenna. For the smaller boats I prefer a 36" whip with a loaded base--Metz and Shakesphere both make them. If you want the antenna higher, then put a short extension on the base. This way the antenna will not be broken or used as a grab rail. (Why to folks always seem to grab antennas when on a boat instead of the hand rails?)

As for names: I like unique names--do a Google search on the name to see if there are any implications (you don't like) and do a vessel documentation search to see how many documented vessels have the same name (none have "Gone Fish’N"). Make it a name which has meaning for you~!

I have no comments on the planar reels, but down riggers are fairly standard in the mounts, and we like rail mounted fishing rod holders so you can adjust the angle.

I have thought that 'C-weet 16' would be a good name.

Charlie,

Congratulations on your new 16. You will love it. Love As to the name, you can check on this site, under the heading of "Our C-Dorys" and look for the names of boats of list users. Dr. Bob gave a couple of other good sources. Thumbs Up I believe Boat U.S. and West Marine also have boat name listings. Try Google for "boat names". When my wife and I decided to get move out of our Montgomery 15, we decided the name of the next boat was going to be either, "No Boom" for a power boat, or for a larger sail vessel, "Duck-a-Boom". Neither one of those won out. We spent 6 months, on our 22CD Cruiser, discussing names before we settled. No law says you have to have the name on it before it hits the water. then again, it's possible to change the name, however it's a bit of an expense, and pain, Wink and there are some who have definate compunctions.

Welcome Charlie.
Hand rails are for...HANDS! Imagine going forward at night in the rain.
There is plenty of room above the eyebrow to thru bolt antane mounts.
In this location there can be no leaks into the cabin and you can route wires thru at the same spot as the mast light wire.
Good luck with your 16 Angler!

Hi Charlie, I recently decided on "Humpy" for my 16 Angler, because I had so much fun catching Humpies this season. But I almost named my boat "Susie-Q" after a favorite CCR song! So I guess Susie-Q is still available.

A very good name for a fishing boat might be "FINE LINES"
