Today we got Constant Craving out on the Willamette between Oregon City and Newberg, and I heartily agree with everyone regarding Permatrim. Much better control of the nose of the boat, and it tracks better at low speed.
For grins, i opened it up with the engine trimmed down, and the boat wanted to lean heavily on the right side. I am not sure if that is prop torque, or just that most of the weight of my boat is on the right, but it was not comfortable. So lesson learned, don't go WOT with the engine trimmed down.
It was a great fall cruise.

Steve - I notice that my boat tends to level out (side to side) at higher speeds. At slow speed I list to the starboard, but that is because I am loaded heavier on that side. I haven’t noticed if engine trim makes any difference in the list.
When you say engine trimmed down, do you mean the bow down?

Dave,
Yes, I had the bow down as far as it would go. Like you, I am much heavier on the right side. Kicker, two group 24 batts, and my 246lbs.
With the bow trimmed up, I was pretty level, but it was actually uncomfortable with the bow trimmed down and the throttle open.

Do you have trim tabs? Do they serve the same purpose as trim tabs? The wife and I headed out this weekend and I was impressed with the trim tabs - really made a huge difference on ride quality and comfort at higher speeds. Trimmed down they took about 1mph off but the ride was worth it. I trimmed the engines up at was cooking about 30mph on smooth water. Granted I didn't check the water speed but still thought that was more than enough for the wife and I. |

Trim tabs also allow lateral (side to side) trim adjustment, whereas a hydrofoil works only in the fore-aft plane.
Trim tabs are more efficient at fore aft adjustments, as the motor drive can be kept parallel while the trim adjustment is done with the tabs. In the hydrofoil case, triming with the foil also moves the motor's thrust at different angles to the boat which is less efficient.
Besides simple trim, the one really big advantage of either the tabs or the hydrofoil is to hold the bow down into the chop waves to cut into them rather than to pound on each one.

I would add to what Joe says in that with widely spaced twins, such as a TC, permatrims would have that side to side effect as well if you trim the engines separately. Seems like you could have the best of both! I plan to get them for CAPTAIN'S CAT! On Edit: Just ordered a pair....not in stock however, they're coming from New Zealand!
