For some reason...my connection (radio to gps) isn't working. I have a feeling it's related to the shielding wire. The way I understand the instructions...the "shield" wire needs to be grounded(?) _________________ Snal~

The connection, I assume, is to provide lat/long data FROM the GPS TO the radio. In that case make sure that you are using the NMEA OUTPUT port on the GPS, to the NMEA input port on the radio. I don't know of any data the radio should send TO the GPS.
The NMEA 0183 signal on my chartplotter is a bi-level signal, meaning it has two wires, one low and one high. These two wires should go to the corresponding pins on the radio. No shield is needed, but if you use one ground one end to the connector backshell.
Next, turn on the proper output sentences in the GPS. I assume there is an INSTALL menu on the GPS, and just select a sentence which outputs lat/long.

I have my ICOM M422 connected to a Raymarine C70 chartplotter with a four pin plug and jack. I had it installed at a local radio shop - the tech made me a diagram of the plug and jack indicating which wires including shield are connected. If you cannot resolve your problem I will send you the diagram. |

Well...I've double checked my wiring, it seems correct. I did see that I hadn't programmed my gps to send the signal...so I did that...still doesn't work.
My mind isn't functioning at 100% right now...so I'll dig a little deeper into the manuals in a day or 2.
Thansk for the replies! |

Figured it out! My wiring was correct, and I had programmed the correct communication port on the gps (in relation to the wires and diagram in the Garmin manual)....but I "fixed" the problem when I programmed the "second" communication port on the gps. Everything works correctly now...but the "comm port 2" wires from the gps aren't even hooked to anything!
The "help" pages from the ICOM website did state that Garmin wire colors can differ...but my Garmin manual clearly labels the wires that I used as "comm. port 1".
Happ...happy...joy...joy! |

Yep!...The only thing weaker than my ability to accomplish a electrical job would be my ability to comprehend directions |

There is another way to look at my mantra. The skill got you into installing your own electronics, which isn't trivial. The luck was when you figured out the Garmin GPS. They compliment one another. I figure I put a lot of work into getting the job done using what skill I have, but the luck comes with keeping at it.
Anyway Congratulations and Good Luck.
