CB radio quit.......again

My 1 yr. old expensive Cobra CB radio quit last week while out fishing. It received but did not x-mit. Really unhandy as that is the local primary communication method using Ch.33.
Using my cell and VHF I got by for the day.
On the beach I found an old Uniden mic in my shed that had the same 4 pin plug. Installed it and volla......it works again. Took Cobra mic appart. Looked good. Sprayed the slider switch with Triflo (can use WD40) and volla......it now works also. Now I have a spare mic.
I have found that CB's are not a real durable piece of electronic equip. It pays to have a spare.

I'm not surprised that the mic went bad. I used to have to have them repaired on a fairly regular basis when I was running the Assistance Van and using the radio for hours on end. The mic would last about 6 months. The radio's were usually fine for a year or two at most before having to replace the final output transistors. Of course I had the final output transistors bumped up pretty good too. I wish I still had a good tech to do that kind of work!

I finally switched to using a modified 10m Ham radio that would transmit on 11m (CB Frequencies). That worked the best (although only legal with the radio on low power ).

Most of the Uniden and Cobra CB's used to have common Mic plugs. I don't know if they still do. I'll have to see if I can find my old Uniden PC122 to put in the boat. That little thing was a good solid radio.
