I went tuna fishing out of Crescent City yesterday. I meet a lot of milestones by doing so.

I had full tanks when we left the dock. Full to the top, a first for me, and the boat seemed to handle the conditions better in the pond. I could go faster with less pounding.

When we arrived at the warmer waters, around 30 miles out, we started fishing. I had rigged five hand lines in the water and within 5 minutes we had 2 tuna. They were smaller fish but the smiles were ear to ear. We had four hookups once, three hookups several times, and many double hookups. We landed thirty fish, some approaching 30 pounds. We had close to 500 lbs of fish. So

I started heading back and noticed the bow high. I also notice the back deck wash awash in blood. So the boat had more weight in it than ever before and it seemed to handle better. I cruised in around 15 knots and had a very comfortable ride.

When I trailered the boat a fish and game warden walked over and asked how we did. I showed him the fish box and he said nice catch and have a nice day. No measuring or checking gear and licenses. Nice.

Then I called my commercial buddy who also fished in the area to see how he did. He had 50 fish (he makes a living doing this). So we enjoyed the day, but his fuel bill was for 100 gallons of gas where I looked at the tanks and had only used 30 gallons. (we fished around 30 miles offshore and had trolled at 7 knots)

Then my wife came down to stake her claim. She probably took 75 lbs of tuna to distribute to our family members. Every one was happy. My partners took the rest.

What a day, I was beginning to feel like my name changed to Bob. I was smiling and all around me were happy.

What a difference. I have tuna experience now, like the boat better with more weight, great fuel mileage and everyone around me was happy.

Wow, can't imagine being able to keep 30 fish from one outing(unless you have about 20 people in the boat) Are tuna being culled down there?
Nice day fishing.

1Tuberide;

I have fished albacore for many years on the North Coast. This is an exceptional year. There are good numbers of Dorado and Blue Fin out there. Those are fish we don't get in good numbers or this early in the season. Go to this link for the local tuna board, www.offshoreanglers.com or www.Ifish.net has mostly Oregon fishing. Tuna fishing sort of makes Salmon fishing boring.
The good thing about your wife giving the fish away is, you don't have to clean or can it yourself. I have canned 7 cases so far and the season has just started.

Great job on your trip
