Heading for Alaska in three weeks (7/14/7) for two weeks of fishing for halibut and salmon.
My fishing/hunting buddy down here has property on the Kenai, about 15 miles out of Soldotna, off of Funny River Road.
Dang- I'm getting itchy- at work in body only right now. Wink

Sounds like a lot of fun, Roger. I'm Mr. Green with envy. Have a great time, catch lots of fish and post some pics.

Don't fret....there are lots of them and they will be waiting when you get here.

Have a good trip and good fishing.

Roger,

I've got a place about 14 miles up Funny River Road and plan to be there during the red run doing a mix of halibut fishing and salmon fishing. If you see a green CD22 up on Funny River Road, that would be me.

Tom

So what are the odds..........?????????

Today, I was getting ready to beach launch at Deep Creek, Alaska for some salmon trolling when this stranger comes up to my boat and introduced himself as Roger...Fishtales from Carpenteria, Calif.. He had just come in with wife & friends from "scoring "a bunch of halibut.

A short chat and he went to clean fish and I went fishing. Nice folks.

Small world.

Jack,
Nice to meet you and your son and others. Hope you guys did as well as we did.

Here's a slight summery of our trip ( wish I were as eloquent a writer as James on the Wild Blue)

Arrived Sat. 7/14 around 9:30pm, had a great dinner at Louies? in Kenai.

Sun after getting situated in camp, we started to troll for kings salmon. Caught 50# Kenai king near mile 37 on the river, hen harvested 10# roe, after only two hours on the river.

Monday went to clam gulch, down the beach about 5 miles for ~270 razor clams

Tues fished for kings and sockeye- slow- few fish coming up the river

Wed vacuum sealed the king prepped for halibut, caught and released a ~5# rainbow

Thurs fished halibut out of deep creek- 10 fish- I got large fish at 31#. Saw a red 22’ heading towards Soldotna. Saw an old 25’ pro angler charter at deep creek

Friday slow fishing

Sat birthday party for my friends grandson

Sunday back out for halibut out of deep creek 12 fish kid got big fish. Met Jack of Alaska and his son on High Tide as we were coming out, they were heading out for salmon.

Mon went to Anchorage B&J fishing hunting and sportsmans warehouse. On the way back to Soldotna we passed a C-Dory heading towards Anchorage around midnight at copper creek

Tuesday rain few sockeye

Wed slow for sockeyes. Went to homer, had dinner at lands end on the spit. Around 5:00 saw a CD 22 coming around the end. Walked through the harbor and saw 2 older 22 and a newer 25.

Thursday scratched out limits of sockeye

Friday easy limits of sockeye, large fish was a 12# buck

Sat take a boat ride up the Kenai to Moose River, fly home- We are now stuck in Phoenix due to US Airways canceling our flight. We were supposed to leave here at 10:15am- now we are stuck until 4:20pm---- sucks.

Had a great time in Alaska

Glad you enjoyed your trip. It amazes me how many folks come to Alaska 2 weeks before any fish run or a week after a fish run and expect to slay em. With their Rainbow fishery, the Kenai region is an exception and a lot of folks don't realize that during the majority of the year many Alaskan waters are fishless!
Good planing is paramount, good friends helps too.
A lot of Alaskan saltwater areas are considered "Terminal Harvest" areas and sport enhanced limits as well as giving you the option to snag! There is a bay close to where you were that host a good Red run and is somewhat of a local attraction, for those days you feel aggressive or just plain don't want to take the time to hook em in the mouth. Kind of an Alaskan grocery shopping experience.

We will be headed to Seward again this time in and Valdez after that, then sadly it's over for another year.
Mike

FishTales,
It sound like you had a good trip up here. Glad to hear it. too bad the trip home was the sh--ts. I just round tripped it to Wisc. this weekend w/o any problems thankfully.
The old ProAngler CD charter boat was a 26' not a 25. Picky--picky.
Anyway it was nice to meet you. If you come this way again I live 1st road south of the road to the launch. stop in.

Jack
